It won't be a repeat of the Black Tsunami. It might do some damage at marinas if the energy travels that way.

to produce a damaging tsunami, that far off the coast.

Incidentally, the Japanese scientific definition of "tsunami" is just "any seismically-induced sea wave" and is not limited to catastrophic sea waves.

If it produces an underwater landslide, you bet your bippy it can produce a tsunami.

Any sea wave generated by seismic activity is a tsunami. Only a very few tsunamis, however, are catastrophic. The world's worst tsunamis since the 1960 Chilean earthquake have all been caused by quakes of magnitude 7.0 or above, with all but one being at least 7.6 . Granted, the M7.0 quake, which produced a devastating tsunami off the coast of Papua New Guinea in 1998, was accompanied by a landslide.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami threat from the quake. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory, warning of strong currents, but said no tsunami damage was expected.
