Derailed CSX train in West Virginia hauled newer-model tank cars

A CSX Corp (CSX.N) oil train that derailed and erupted in flames in West Virginia on Monday was hauling newer model tank cars, not the older versions widely criticized for being prone to puncture, the firm said.
All of the oil tank cars on the 109-car train were CPC 1232 models, CSX said late Monday. The train, which was carrying North Dakota crude to an oil depot in Yorktown, Virginia, derailed in a small town 33 miles (54 km) southeast of Charleston.
The CPC 1232 is the newer, supposedly tougher version of the DOT-111 cars that were manufactured up until 2011. The DOT-111 cars have been faulted by regulators and operators for a number of years. U.S. and Canadian authorities, under pressure to address a spate of fiery accidents, are seeking to phase out the older models.
It was the second significant oil-train incident in three days following a Canadian National Railways (CNR.TO) train from Alberta's oil sands that derailed in a wooded area of northern Ontario on Feb. 14. CN said 29 of 100 cars were involved and seven caught fire. No injuries were reported.

They have 20 more years to roll out these "safer" tank cars...and the the "safer" ones still blow up?
Wasn't there a movie called "Unsafe at any Speed?"
Time for a sequel.

On the other hand, I've never heard of a Solar or wind spill.

(1,407 posts)problem is we consume a lot of energy. I have yet to see a study that solar/wind can meet our current needs. And then you have to come up with ways to implement on a mass scale without harming wildlife.

(34,661 posts)NTSB report on this one. Got a hunch we see weather related issue and something dealing with rail fatigue. With all of the mergers in the Rail Industry,me thinks maintenance is lacking,do to major man power and cost savings just to report Engineered Earnings.

(15,882 posts)people we kill now with these trains might be the lucky ones. Because the end game, the one we are leaving our kids and their because we are too fat and lazy to do anything different is likely to be much more painful.
I bet they piss on our graves in disgust.

See. It all works out. Except f/ environment, clean water, breathable air, & future generations.
