UPDATED story here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/10141017818

LINCOLN — Nebraska lawmakers launched Tuesday into what could be four days of debate about requiring voters to show government-issued photo identification.

At issue is Legislative Bill 111, introduced by State Sen. Tyson Larson of O’Neill. The bill is similar to proposals introduced in previous years that failed in the face of filibusters.

Larson said his bill is needed to “protect the integrity and reliability of the election process.” He said polls show strong support for voter ID laws among Nebraskans.

But opponents said there have been no cases of voter fraud in Nebraska that could have been prevented with the bill at hand.

3. It is a golden opportunity for progressives

Launching a massive voter registration and ID campaign can only have good results.
The people most likely to object or refuse "government" issued ID's would be the frightwingers, giving them the option to sign up or shut up.

4. If they did that here in California, it would keep my father, who is a WWII Veteran

from the ability to vote. He is 91, and does not have a valid drivers license since he doesn't drive any longer. This is blatant voter suppression, period.

But when he decided to stop driving, we went down to DMV and they gave him a California ID Card. It even has the same number as his driver's license, but is simply valid, State issued identification. Anyone with a valid DL or birth certificate or other documentation can get it.

But my father would not be able to go sit down there for three hours waiting his turn.

14. Sorry. Right wingers love this. They already have the ID.

Who doesn't? -- Poor people. Urban people. The elderly. College students. And the laws are designed to make obtaining the ID as difficult, inconvenient, and expensive as possible.

The very best the progressives can hope for, with a major effort, is to maintain our already gerrymandered status quo.

I miss the good old days when voting was a right.

16. You assume there are not poor, urban, elderly, or college students who are republicans

This is a major mistake. There are people of every political persuasion in every age, economic, and gender status.
The right wingers take advantage and make sure those among them get registered. They make use of social networks notable their churches in a most effective manner.
I do agree that voting should be a give right. Everyone would still at some point have to provide some form of ID no matter what.
I does not further the left to whine about the rules we allowed to be put in place. It is our responsibility to make sure all that can vote do so no matter how hard they have made it.

Seems to hit more Republicans in the state which is an odd way of getting out the vote.

Since there are tons of people who were born at home, who may not be able to provide the necessary documentation to obtain an ID.

Not to mention that the conservatives may well be shooting themselves in the foot. Omaha residents (leaning liberal) will be far more likely to have been born in a hospital than older rural Nebraskans (leaning conservative).

Want to put all this voter disenfranchisement behind us then start the effort to get EVERY state to go with Vote By Mail.. Otherwise just let Republicans have it all...

Because nowhere in the Constitution does it say gender benders can vote.
