Nearly 140 faculty members at the University of Illinois Springfield have signed on to form a union.
The union certification completed Friday sets the stage for contract negotiations with the university on issues of wages, shared governance with the school administration, use of temporary and part-time faculty, and freedom from retaliation when advocating for students rights, according to an announcement Tuesday from the newly certified union.
The union says 137 faculty members have affiliated with the Illinois Federation of Teachers. There are approximately 218 full-time faculty at UIS, according to the school website.
"A union for UIS is a win for the faculty, but also a win for students," union president Donna Bussell, a professor of English and linguistics, said in a statement.
