India's Cabinet Committee on Security on 17 February approved the indigenous construction of seven frigates and six nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) for an estimated INR1 trillion (USD16.66 billion).
Senior Ministry of Defence (MoD) officials told IHS Jane's at Aero India 2015 that under the INR453.81 billion follow-on Project 17A, four of the seven locally designed 5,600 tonne frigates would be built by Mazagon Dockyard Limited (MDL) in Mumbai.
Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) at Kolkata will simultaneously construct the three remaining warships.
Under the earlier Project 17 MDL built three stealth frigates, INS Shivalik , INS Satpura and INS Sahyadri , which entered service from 2010 to 2012.
