Fire rips through Dubai skyscraper
Source: BBC
A fire has ripped through the Torch skyscraper in Dubai, one of the tallest residential buildings in the world.
Strong winds are helping the blaze to spread across the 336.1m (1,105ft) building in the marina district.
One witness said it looked like "the Titanic going down", Gulfnews.com reports.
It was not immediately known what caused the fire or whether people were inside the building. There are no reports yet of any casualties.

(33,982 posts)You'd need one HELL of a fire to bring that much concrete down. Totally different construction method than the twin towers or WTC7. Very little steel to heat.
Concrete pillars can spall in a fire, but it needs to be a lot of fire. Like, a lot lot, not just dramatic photos at night lot.

(2,188 posts)Both Twin Towers and WTC7. So I'd still bet against it.

(5,751 posts)The little science that we have (the rest was destroyed or sold to China as scrap metal) draws an inescapable conclusion (for open-minded and reasonable thinking people) - the collapse of the twin towers and WTC-7 were in fact ENGINEERED. The real question is - who is responsible? Why was the entire chapter in the 9/11 Commission report regarding foreign government support and involvement in 9/11 withheld as national security sensitive? Why were 15 of 19 hijackers from Saudi Arabia?

(13,382 posts)Those planes were not fully loaded that day with either fuel or passengers! did that escape you too?
"The Jet Fuel
In the popular imagination, the jet fuel was the biggest factor in bringing down the towers. News reports emphasized that the transcontinental flights were fully loaded with fuel, while later government reports stated that the 767s were carrying about 10,000 of their 24,000-gallon capacity, and that most of the jet fuel likely burned off within five minutes. Thus, the jet fuel primarily served to ignite the post-crash fires rather than sustain them. "
hack89
(39,171 posts)250 tons hitting at 500 mph carrying 10,000 gallons of fuel is going to cause a lot of damage, correct?
The WTC were unique because they are the only tall buildings that have been hit by a large planes flying at high speed. So the comparison to Dubai are idiotic.
wildbilln864
(13,382 posts)the towers were designed to take the impact of a "fully loaded" passenger plane which would have been close. Multiple impacts even, according to the designer.

(13,382 posts)the majority of jet fuel, which is mostly kerosene, exploded outside the towers. But aside from that, how can you explain molten steel flowing like rivers underneath all three towers?

This building was mostly trophy flats, probably sold to 1%er investors and unoccupied. Apparently they did manage to evacuate the people who actually lived there, one surmises mostly on the lower, non trophy floors.
