Union at Shell and Motiva plants in Norco, Convent set to strike

Source: NOLA

By Manuel Torres

The union representing workers at Shell and Motiva refineries in Norco and Convent has given notice of a strike set to begin Saturday, according to the union and Shell.

The United Steelworkers said it gave notice to the companies late Friday night, after talks between union and company representatives failed to produce agreement on issues of safety, pay and benefits.

The union said workers will walk out within 24 hours at Motiva refineries in Norco and Convent, and at Shell's chemical plant in Norco. The union also said workers walked out at 12 a.m. Saturday at Motiva's refinery in Port Arthur, Texas.

"The industry's refusal to meaningfully address safety issues through good faith bargaining gave us no other option but to expand our work stoppage," USW International President Leo Gerard said in a statement.

Shell and most majors are still rolling in dough, despite low oil prices. If anyone can afford to raise pay and benefits, they can!!
