Bill O’Reilly’s Argentina story challenged by ex-CBS News journalist

Source: Washington Post

Fox News host Bill O’Reilly did his utmost at week’s end to discredit a Mother Jones story on his alleged embellishments of his reporting from Argentina in 1982. After the story by David Corn and Daniel Schulman hit the Internet on Thursday afternoon, the famous TV personality spent hours on the phone with reporters blasting it. “David Corn is a guttersnipe liar,” O’Reilly told this blog. And on his show last night, he repeated the attacks.

The apparent goal of O’Reilly’s frenzy was to keep the story from breaking into the next week.

A Facebook posting by a former CBS News correspondent, however, appears likely to keep the questions flowing toward the O’Reilly camp. An extensive rant by Eric Jon Engberg, who served as a CBS News correspondent for 27 years, calls into question several of O’Reilly’s statements about the reporting — and O’Reilly’s subsequent recollections of it.

(...)

Engberg: “The only place where such an injury could have occurred was the relatively tame riot I have described above. Neither [Larry] Doyle, who would have been immediately informed of injury to any CBS personnel, nor anyone else who was working the story remembers a cameraman being injured that night. No one who reported back to our hotel newsroom after the disturbance was injured; if a cameraman had been ‘bleeding from the ear’ he would have immediately reported that to his superiors at the hotel.” This allegation on O’Reilly’s part, alleges Engberg, is “not credible without further confirmation.” Further, he calls on O’Reilly to identify the cameraman as a way of allowing the vetting of the story.

Here's hoping this story grows legs. BillO needs suspended, if FOX has anywhere near the standards NBC does (bit let's not kid ourselves)

Wasn't it "BillO The Clown?"

He sure deserves that epithet.

IMO he could be driven into an on-air meltdown over this. And it wouldn't be hard to accomplish.

E-mail focksnooz and tell them you are a regular viewer. If you're a veteran tell them that as well. Inform them that you are appalled at O'Reilly's embellishment of a routine reporting assignment to try to fool viewers into believing he somehow was involved in combat. Say it's a disgrace and an affront to "the troops" as well as to legitimate combat reporters. It's essential to his self image that he is portrayed as a macho man, so if you can, include something about his wife's affair with a Long Island cop and O'Reilly's chickenshit reaction to it. CC other news outlets.

If they hear this enough foxnooz will have to do something. If the story grows legs and gets covered in other media they'll be under the gun. O'Reilly isn't strong enough to handle this kind of criticism without lashing out. Sooner or later he'll snap and make a public spectacle of himself.

The ideal conclusion to this episode is to see O'Reilly led off the set of the "factor" babbling in a straight jacket.

That's probably at the lower end of their demographic. They REALLY can't afford to lose the 60 somethings, because most of the rest of their audience will be dead in 10 years (or so demented they just stare at test patterns as well as anything).

I didn't see Vietnam although I was a VEV. I am also over 60 so I hope I haven't offended anyone. I just hate Bill O'Really?

means he's on to Something Big!

fox "news" won't do anything except give him a raise.. but it might sully billo's creds just a bit from people who actually care about the truth.

Here is a ABC news clip from 6/16/1982, the morning after the riot that Billo lied about. Argentina surrendered on the 14th., a brief riot broke out on the 15th. In his book, Billo claims rioters BROKE INTO the palace...FALSE. He claimed massive fatalities with soldiers gunning down civilians, etc. Well if all this REALLY happened, don't you think it would be covered in this report the next morning?

By lying about his non-existent combat experience, O'Reilly has demeaned every service member who has experienced the terror of combat.
