Final Poll Shows Mayor's Race Too Close to Call

Source: NBC Chicago

A final poll out before Tuesday's municipal election shows again that Mayor Rahm Emanuel doesn't have the clear backing to avoid a run-off.

While he leads the Ogden and Fry poll, out Monday, Emanuel doesn't have the crucial 50 percent-plus one vote to avoid having the race go to April 7.

The latest weekly sampling of random voters showed Emanuel with 48 percent of the vote. Jesus "Chuy" Garcia earned 26.5 percent, while Willie Wilson had 15 percent, Ald. Bob Fioretti had Fioretti 7 percent and William "Dock" Walls had 3 percent.

The margin of error in the poll was +/- 3.68 percent.

I remember watching reruns of the Untouchables TV series in the 1970s (The original series ran in the 1950s) and how the "Capone gang" tried to rig the elections. Who the Capone gang supported was mentioned, it was Thompson, but his political party was NEVER mentioned, for it was the GOP. The Democratic Party of Chicago of the 1930s and 1940s was called corrupt, but Democratic Mayor Kelly, mayor 1933-1947, did not die the mufti-millionaire that Thompson was on his death in 1944 (at his death, two safety deposit boxes containing 1.5 million dollars were discovered).

He ran again in 1927 during city wide gang war. Always a flamboyant campaigner, Thompson held a debate between himself and two live rats which he used to portray his opponents. Pledging to clean up Chicago and remove the crooks, Thompson instead turned his attention to the reformers, whom he considered the real criminals.... Al Capone's support allowed Thompson to return to the mayor's office using such tactics as the "Pineapple Primary" which occurred April 10, 1928, so-called because of the hand grenades thrown at polling places to disrupt voting. The St. Valentine's Day Massacre also took place while Thompson was mayor.

As to Kelly, considered corrupt but no hard evidence of any such corruption (could be corrupt, but also the accusation could be traditional GOP attacks on a Democratic Mayor). Kelly's biggest problem, and the main reason he was dumped as Mayor in 1947, was he tolerated African Americans moving into any neighborhood of Chicago they wanted to move into. By 1947 this was no longer acceptable to the voters of Chicago and the Democratic Party of Chicago dumped Kelly to make sure the GOP did not win that year on the issue of restricting where African Americans could live if they wanted to live in Chicago.

No, I'm serious. Jesus "Chuy" Garcia is a Democrat. Rock the vote for Jesus, screw Rahmbo.
