International Space Station astronaut finds water pooling in helmet after spacewalk of over six hours

Updated 10 minutes ago

An American astronaut has found water pooling inside his helmet after he finished a spacewalk of over six hours at the International Space Station, raising new concerns about the safety of NASA's spacesuits.

Astronaut Terry Virts was not harmed during the incident, which the US space agency described as "minor" compared to the near-drowning of an Italian astronaut when a similar problem occurred in 2013.

But mission managers will be poring over the data at a meeting later in the week to decide whether another spacewalk can go ahead as planned, a NASA spokesman said.

Even before this series of three spacewalks began, NASA voiced concern about a recurring problem with the American spacesuits in a part of the temperature control system known as the fan pump separator.

Problem is, it swells... Can get crowded in a helmet. :D AtheistCrusader Feb 2015 #2
It won't take up significantly more space than the water? MannyGoldstein Feb 2015 #3

That stuff absorbs an incredible amount of water.

I guess it depends on exactly how it stores the water, and whether it ONLY uptakes water (in a pure-O2/No-Nitrogen atmosphere) with the fluid.

Maybe I'm wrong - and I'm too lazy to check right now - but I will bet that the company responsible is either not American or a Republican-led company. Or low bidder. Or all of those things. Granted, it sounds like a very limited event, which is great, but I just gotta believe budget cuts and anti-science companies and funders are somehow involved.

Ok, conspiracy theory over.

It wasn't a matter of the best tech not being up to snuff--politicians didn't want the best. They had to save that money for defense contracts, oil subsidies, and the like.
