Boehner Has a Plan to Avoid a DHS Shutdown—But It Might Not Pass
Source: National Journal
Speaker John Boehner on Thursday night finally laid out a plan to avert a partial shutdown of the Homeland Security Department: kick the can a little farther down the road. Yet even that may fail.
With just one day left until funding runs dry for DHS, Boehner urged his conference to pass a three-week extension of current funding and try to force Senate Democrats into a conference committee to resolve their differences. The only alternatives, he told his members behind closed doors, would be to let the department shut down or capitulate to the Senate by passing a clean full-year funding bill.
But passing the measure in the House will not be easy. Boehner's partial solution comes after a weeks-long deadlock, and he is stuck between angry conservatives adamant about blocking President Obama's executive action on immigration and moderates concerned about the politics of a shutdown.

(25,270 posts)The Repugs seemed to win more battles when they were not in control of Congress. Now they are disjointed and look weak in comparison to when they were not in control. What gives?

(25,270 posts)I know that they picked up all those seats in the Senate and House - but since they took over Congress it doesn't seem like they are able to lead and it looks like the President and the Dems are having some wins and the Repugs can't get it together.
That's what I'm eluding to.

(19,567 posts)Then, when it's over, they're going to have to give the Democrats a clean full year of funding or it's shutdown time? Because, from what I can see, he sure didn't give the Senate Democrats any reason in his words to feel forced into a conference committee.
Stand strong Senate Democrats, we're winning this one.

"Boehner unsure if he convince his caucus to delay defunding the Department of Homeland Security for a measly three weeks; unable to find a way to blame it on Democrats."

(1,727 posts)funding for DHS. Maybe if their protection goes first, Congress will see the need for DHS. If it is always someone else, the Republicans won't care. The game playing with national security has to stop.

(36,437 posts)The Prez should tell him to pound sand. The goddamn Republican Senate passed this thing. The REPUBLICAN SENATE. Boehner can't get the House majority to pass something that was passed by the fucking Republican Senate? Didn't this fucking bill pass the Republican Senate 98-2 or something?
It is to laugh. To absolutely laugh!
The Republicans are fucking clowns.
