Cardinal Edward Egan, seen outside St. Patrick's Cathedral after celebrating his final Easter mass as archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York in 2009, has died at the age of 82.

Cardinal Edward Egan, former head of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, died at a hospital in Manhattan Thursday. He was 82 years old.

Egan was pronounced dead at NYU Langone Medical Center at 2:20 p.m. after going into cardiac arrest, Archdiocese officials say.

Cardinal Egan dying is not for the religious page. He was a high profile political and religious leader. This story is exactly where it belongs.
