Neo-confederate Klan ‘Wizardess’ erected pro-KKK billboard near historic Selma bridge

Source: RawStory/NY Daily News

A billboard honoring the founder of the Ku Klux Klan now stands within sight the historic bridge in Selma, Alabama that was the site of the 1965 “Bloody Sunday” clash between civil rights protesters and police.

The New York Daily News reported Saturday that the billboard shows Nathan Bedford Forrest — Klan founder and Confederate war hero — astride his horse with the motto, “Keep the skeer on ‘em,” meaning, “Keep them afraid.”

President Barack Obama is traveling to Selma on Saturday to march alongside Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) and thousands of celebrants as they commemorate the historic clash which took place on March 7, 1965, as a crowd of nonviolent, mostly black protesters marched headlong into a column of Alabama National Guardsmen and other law enforcement officers.

Ironically, on the opposite side of the Forrest billboard — which reads “Visit Selma’s War Between the States historic sites” — is a sign welcoming the president and others to Selma for the 50th anniversary of the march. “Selmapostherald.com Welcomes President Barack Obama and you to Selma,” reads the other sign.

No one can say racism is over when they see signs like this popping up.
It is also good that it stands right next to the very symbol of that hate and the battle to overcome it.

And people are free to display their stupidity, if that's what they choose to do. From the New York Daily News article:

The head of the group behind the controversial billboard scoffed at the suggestion that some might find it offensive.

"That billboard was put there with positive intent to ask people who come to Selma to explore and enjoy our 19th century history," said Patricia Goodwin, head of the group Friends of Forrest Inc.

"Does it say anything in the Constitution where a certain faction of people cannot be offended?" she added. "I'm offended by all these people walking around with their pants hanging around their knees."

Goodwin said she chose the location because it was highly visible to visitors. She insisted that it has nothing to do with the KKK or Forrest’s role in its founding.

The Civil Rights movement is not just a Birmingham/Selma/Montgomery, Alabama problem. It is a universal problem. And your tax dollars, federal and State, are being used to perpetuate the biggest lie since Lincoln! I mean millions and millions of your tax dollars!

Since Selma, Alabama – the Civil Rights Hot Pot of the World – is my home, I witnessed the trash that came here in 1965. In 1965, and for a few years thereafter, the people of Selma, Alabama, were willing to tell the truth about this “Mother of All Orgies”… but now, the scalawag/carpetbaggers see $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ in the civil rights movement! They don’t even realize they are aiding and abetting the ultimate goal of the One World Order – to brown AmeriKa and annihilate our Anglo-Celtic-European culture!

It is funny to see people talk about "west European heritage" when, if their ancestors could speak, they would likely be ripping themselves out of their descendant's flesh, so that Norman blood would not have to travel through the same veins as a Saxon!

As a graphic designer with 20+ years in the sign industry this shit intrigues me.

Who was the person who put the artwork together?

Who were the people who printed out the graphic?

Who was hired for the installation?

I don't do much sign business in the southeast, but I sure would like to know who made this happen.

Selma is celebrating BOTH events. The battle of Selma was Forest's only defeat. In many ways the march in 1965 from Selma was planned in response to Civil war celebrations of the 1960s.

The protesters did not fight back...they were well trained in non violence...it was a case of the police attacking them.
And the footage of it played on the TV changed public opinion.
