Mexican officials have detained four alleged cartel members believed to be involved in an attack Sunday night on Matamoros Mayor Leticia Salazar, the Associated Press reported.
A vehicle transporting Salazar came under a barrage of bullets in downtown Matamoros but the mayor and her bodyguards survived the attack unharmed, authorities said.
Herminio Garza, Tamaulipas state secretary, said in an interview with the Televisa network on Monday that federal police captured four suspected gunmen before dawn. He said the suspects told authorities they believed the convoy belonged to rivals encroaching on their territory, not the mayor, the AP reported.
According to reports, the attack occurred around 8 p.m. as Salazar traveled in a reinforced bulletproof vehicle flanked by two other vehicles down Gonzalez and 21st streets.
