Federal Bill Introduced to Legalize Medical Marijuana
Source: marijuana policy project
Historic legislation is being introduced right now in the United States Senate. Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY), Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) are announcing the introduction of the Compassionate Access, Research Expansion, and States Rights (CARERS) Act. This is the first time legislation that would make medical marijuana legal under federal law has been introduced in the Senate.
Ask your senators to co-sponsor this historic legislation.
First and foremost, the bill would make production, distribution, and possession of marijuana for medical purposes thats legal under state law legal under federal law. The bill would also remove barriers to scientific research, allow Veterans Administration physicians to recommend medical marijuana, allow interstate transportation of CBD oils, ensure medical marijuana dispensaries are taxed fairly, and allow all marijuana businesses including adult-use stores in Colorado and elsewhere to access the banking system and no longer be forced to operate on a cash-only basis.
Theres no reason your senators shouldnt be co-sponsoring this bill. Please email their offices and ask them to sign on, and when youre done, ask your friends to do the same.
Thank you,
Dan Riffle,
Director of Federal Policies

Washington, D.C.

This message came to my inbox just minutes ago with a link to a press conference on YouTube. However, there was a message about "technical difficulties" at the URL. People were posting comments about the conference, from how great it was to it's been postponed until 2 pm, so I'm not sure what's happening. I checked MSNBC, CNN and CSPAN on tv and didn't see anything so I don't have a link. Does anyone know anything more?

(13,877 posts)it's a bit of a political/humanitarian cover to press forward with the federal law.
Then there's that Slippery Slope to recreational use I give it no more than 10 years before it will be not only legal, but it revamps products and commerce creating a new market for hemp.

Plus, it is a crop a small farmer can raise, which Big Agra doesn't like.

(18,652 posts)while Pharma could make a mint on mmj by getting in on the action, it's so myopic it can't see how.

(13,877 posts)At least until they can patent some chemical portion of it.

(18,652 posts)In my case, I'm a cancer patient + registered mmj patient. It's absurd to deny it to people. It's helped me with so many of my med problems (anxiety, sleeplessness, pain) with NO side effects except getting a bit high, of course. In addition, a component of mj, cannibidiol (CBD) has been proven anti-inflammatory, antimetastasis, anti-angiogenic, and healthy cell protective in animal studies for my type of cancer. Yet there have been no human studies. Don't tell me Big Pharma isn't holding them up
My friend, age 72, who has breathing probs due to 5 operations including one where he nearly died says mmj helps his breathing, esp. when he combines it with yoga. Unfortunately, in my state his condition isn't one for which he can register as a mmj patient, so he has to obtain mj from other sources. Ridiculous!

(4,522 posts)He decided after decades of pain without relief from his prescribed medications to obtain a MM card. After spending 6 months jumping though the hoops and paying all his fees, he was finally granted one.
Shortly afterward, he received a letter from his primary physician informing him he would no longer treat him. He went looking for a new Dr and was surprised to discover most Dr's in his area now inform all new patients that a drug test will be performed before they are accepted for treatment.
We switched insurance companies a few years ago when my husband got a new job. I went looking for a new Dr. I take NO medications, have NO medical complaints, have NO history of drug abuse, mental illness or incarceration. He wanted to do the usual lab work and then asked me to sign a waver for a drug test. When I refused he literally threw me out of his office. This was in OK.
I don't believe for a minute the medical profession (of which I used to be a part) has ANY intention of allowing MM to reduce their kick backs from big pharm.
Get ready to make a choice for your cancer - a blunt or chemo, you won't be getting both anywhere conservatives hold sway.

(4,775 posts)With all of the inequal protection issues we are seeing in places from NYC to Ferguson, and the U.S.'s status of incarceration nation, we should be legalizing and regulating all use, not just medical use.

(14,910 posts)I only had but a brief moment of free time this afternoon to call your D.C. office and thank you and your staff for these efforts. Unfortunately, I was unable to get through.
With that, thank you for your efforts on this meaningful legislation...
