Sir Terry Pratchett, renowned fantasy author, dies aged 66

Source: BBC

Fantasy author Terry Pratchett has died aged 66 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

"The world has lost one of its brightest, sharpest minds," said Transworld Publishers' Larry Finlay.

Sir Terry, best known for the Discworld series, wrote more than 70 books over his lengthy career.

He was first diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2007, but continued writing, completing his final book last summer.

May his trip be quick, and he find what he seeks at the end of the desert.

AT LAST, SIR TERRY, WE MUST WALK TOGETHER.

Terry took Death’s arm and followed him through the doors and on to the black desert under the endless night.

The End.

Death was one of my favorites. There was a quote in one of his books, "Never trust a dog with orange eyebrows". It cracked me up because at the time I had 4 that matched that description. He will be missed.

The gift of imparting laughter and uplifting people's spirits is one that few are lucky to have and that we are lucky to receive. It's a wonderful legacy to leave behind that the world is a more lighthearted place because you lived in it.

I recall a passage from The Fifth Elephant that, I think, suits this site well :

"Vimes had once discussed the Ephebian idea of ‘democracy’ with Carrot and had been rather interested in the idea that everyone* had a vote until he found out that while he, Vimes, would have a vote, there was no way in the rules that anyone could prevent Nobby Nobbs from having one as well. Vimes could see the flaw there straight away."

*Apart from the women, children, slaves, idiots and people who weren’t really our kind of people.

"Ankh-Morpork had dallied with many forms of government and had ended up with that form of democracy known as One Man, One Vote. The Patrician was the Man; he had the Vote."

Is a copy of Small Gods that he autographed:

"To Kay -- The Turtle moves!" with a sketch of a turtle, including scythe

I'm not Kay -- I bought it pre-owned. Same with Going Postal:

"To Tom -- You're never alone with a Sonkey!

I read Jingo during the run-up to the US invasion of Iraq, and had to check the pub date to assure myself he hadn't written it just for the occasion.

Damn. I wish he could have stayed with us, though I know he was right to leave ....

The tweets from his daughter were perfect.
