Benjamin Netanyahu Using Congressional Address In New Campaign Ad, Just As Critics Warned

Source: Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- When House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) announced he had invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address a joint session of Congress just a few weeks ahead of an Israeli election, he was criticized for giving Netanyahu a platform to boost his campaign.

The United States has a policy of not meeting with foreign leaders in advance of elections, so as not to appear to be tilting the electoral balance. But Netanyahu insisted that his motivations had nothing to do with the election, and that the timing of the speech was demanded by the urgency of the Iran nuclear negotiations. There was simply no time to waste.

Already, however, Netanyahu is using his speech as a prop in a campaign commercial back in Israel, where the prime minister is shown basking in the applause of members of Congress who did not boycott his speech.

With five days left until the Israeli elections, Netanyahu launched the 80-second campaign ad above, featuring his controversial address along with footage of rockets being launched.

He must have seen the recent polls and heard that Shimon Peres has endorsed Herzog.

The Labor Party chose well this time (certainly a lot better than Tzipi Livni), and I hope that will be enough to put them over the top. That is, that Isaac Herzog's gravitas and charisma, combined with Netanyahoo's despotic and hamhanded ways, might just create the perfect storm needed.

So much is riding on this.

I was also very pleased to see that Shimon Peres endorsed Herzog. Starting to get hopeful while also understanding that bibi still has the best chance to build a coalition. But if Herzog gets to try and build that first, who knows what can happen. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Netanyahoo has Hitler's appreciation of propaganda, and his murderousness of Rwandan proportions.

If Kerry and Obama think that this stunt will be the end of it, they've got another thing coming. What's more, as the 2016 campaign approaches, expect Bibi to get even more brazen in his disrespect of both the Obama administration and the U.S. itself.

It was 100% political with Netanyahu. Looks like the GOP's in congress has a new commander in chief. I understand his opponent thinks the same way as Netanyahu does, time will tell.

Doesn't matter if they're extremist right wing "Christian", "Jewish", or "Muslim". No matter whether they're friend or foe, they are all allies. Fighting for hatred, bigotry, narrow mindedness and ignorance. All birds of a feather.

They could do some real damage to that bastard. If they do it.

I think most Israelis would rather that he concentrated on looking after his own country (economic and domestic issues are not great there, from what I hear), rather than swanning around making himself ridiculous and especially biting the hand that feeds Israel.

He is going down in the polls - let's hope he gets booted out tomorrow!
