Hip-hop star not mad at SAE house mom singing n-word
Source: CNN
"I'm not going to be that person," he told CNN. "It's a rock and a hard place. I can't be as upset at that lady. I'm upset at the fraternity because what they're saying is a chant that's just completely disrespectful to the black race. As far as that lady goes -- man, that's an old lady, man. Let that lady be."
<snip>
"It's hard to ridicule somebody for something that you continue to use in your music," he said. "Every (hip-hop) artist is using the n-word in their music -- hit records with the n-word in it. You can't be upset when somebody says it. You can't. It's hard to differentiate when you can use it. If we don't want the word used and the word holds such a negative connotation, then we shouldn't use it at all, period."
<snip>
He has a different take on the fraternity members caught clapping, pumping their fists and chanting, "There will never be a ni**** SAE. You can hang him from a tree, but he can never sign with me."
<snip>
He took it personally, he said, because he and other hip-hop artists travel the country to perform for fraternities, and to know any fraternity member would harbor such vile feelings toward him "burns my heart."

(34,648 posts)Leave her alone. I know she had no foul intentions. I believe her when she says she was singing along and so does almost everyone I know personally, white or black.

(18,124 posts)that left a lot to be desired when it comes to being a human being and not an animal. The frat mom? People need to leave her alone, I guess. I can't help but think though.......maybe she enjoyed it, just speculation because of my personal experience. But the 'rap artist' is correct. The word is used extensively in black society/culture. I CANNOT agree with the use of a word, with a genesis of creation being couched in extreme racial hate, by anyone. That's just my take. I agree about the 'frat mom', I guess.

(34,648 posts)Doesn't mean she was, but she sure wasn't talking about hanging up from trees.
That is my main thing. Her story blew up and it became about her instead of the frat. I won't condone her use of it, I can't. But she took enough lumps by now. Those boys tho.

(15,189 posts)But one doesn't post it. I thought, she's just singing the song, and probably has NO idea the WORLD will see her say those words. All the posts last night were negative towards her, so I thought, why say anything.

(6,241 posts)thread about her. What happened, and the things being said about her, are disgusting. The last time I saw such vileness about an innocent person, it was John Proctor, during a production of The Crucible.

(40 posts)SAE is acting like the problem is OU and not the shitty racist fraternity itself
racism = "lack of judgement in a social setting"

(5,756 posts)The national SAE fraternity has properly revoked the charter of the chapter at OU and done its best to distance itself from the abhorrent acts of that chapter.
Full disclosure: I am not an SAE. I was a Pike in the South. There was most certainly racism in the admition of members to the chapter I was in. It was open and obvious.

(13,340 posts)I went to rush as a Freshmen and couldn't BELIEVE the open and obvious racism. I didn't pledge a Greek fraternity. I did eventually pledge a service fraternity. We still had parties almost every weekend.

(18,124 posts)is open and obvious. Always has been, whether it been covered up or not with 'code' words. I'll never be surprised or shocked at the depraved hate and stupidity that this culture has nurtured for centuries.

(50,278 posts)Some rap lyrics are horrible and if a white person "sings" along does that automatically make them racist? If so, perhaps the person writing the lyrics and performing the lyrics should rethink their wording. I'm not defending the old lady at all. Someone of her age should be able to distinguish rap from music and ignore it.
