Turkey opens fire to stop Syrian migrant ship

Source: AFP

Istanbul (AFP) - The Turkish coastguard opened fire to stop a cargo vessel carrying 337 mainly Syrian migrants heading towards European Union waters and arrested the suspected traffickers, a top local official said Friday.

The coastguard had on Thursday evening launched an operation to chase down the 59 metre (194 foot) Dogan Kartal as it headed through the Dardanelles Straits in northwest Turkey.

The vessel initially paid no heed to calls to stop, including warning shots, but was eventually forced to halt when the guards fired on the engines, the official Anatolia news agency reported.

"It stopped when the engines were fired on and then came to a complete halt when the steering wheel was locked," Ahmet Cinar, the head of the western Canakkale province where the Straits are located, told the agency.

into Iraq and Syria to join the terrorists, but they somehow are able to prevent refugees fleeing the violence from crossing into their country. They are in the same category as our other "allies" the Saudis and Pakistan.

Erdogan is obsessed with overthrowing the Syrian government.

He has let Turkey be a conduit for ISIS or anybody else who wants to fight Assad.

Turkey has done diddly-squat to stop ISIS. Is it even part of the coalition? It doesn't even let the coalition use airbases on its territory to go after ISIS.

ISIS is right on Turkey's border, yet doesn't attack in Turkey. What kind of deal do they have with Ankara?

And Turkey really, really, really wants to suck us into Syria. It's calling on us to impose a no-fly zone, which would effectively put us at war with Syria.
