Tribune poll shows Emanuel with double-digit lead on Garcia
Source: Chicago Tribune
The survey had Emanuel at 51 percent to 37 percent for Garcia with less than four weeks before the April 7 runoff election. Both candidates have gained around 5 percentage points since the first round of voting last month. Another 11 percent of voters remained undecided in the poll, which was conducted March 6 through Wednesday.
For Emanuel, the survey's results illustrate a steady rebound in his approval ratings, which have been on the uptick since the mayor started airing a nonstop stream of TV ads after launching his re-election campaign in November. This week, the mayor and his allies began running commercials attacking Garcia as an old-school politician unwilling to offer specific solutions for Chicago.
For Garcia, the poll reflects a gradual increase in support as Chicagoans continue to become more familiar with him, but it also shows he has not enjoyed a groundswell of voters flocking to his campaign since he emerged as the runner-up Feb. 24.

I've never taken sides in this race, but based on what I know about Chicago politics, I never thought Rahm was likely to lose. I think some people used the first round to express some irritation with him, but Garcia is much more of a factional candidate than a real expression of city-wide reform.

(62 posts)The best skewed poll money can buy. There is no major opposition newspaper in Chicago and hasn't been one in years.

(94,598 posts)FWIW - As enthusiastic as people here have been for Garcia, the first round was NOT close: Rahm came in with 45% to 34% for Garcia. So gaining 5% is not unreasonable, unless you imagined that every single non-Rahm vote was going to shift to Garcia, which would be completely inconsistent with Chicago politics. If you look at the first round, there was an establishment candidate (Rahm), and then a group of candidates representing the local political factions (black, hispanic, white catholic, etc.). There was never evidence of a progressive wave waiting to be unleased; the non-Rahm votes will be reallocated based on policy closeness, deal-making, and any number of local political matters.

It ain't over 'til it's over. There is a lot more anti-Rahm sentiment in the city of Chicago than they realize.

Every vote I've ever cast in Chicago has had at least a paper record that you can view before finalizing. Do you live in a different ward here that has only electronic?
