GOP Senator Says Letter Shouldn't Have Been Addressed to Iran's Leaders

Source: Bloomberg

But Ron Johnson of Wisconsin maintains that any nuclear deal should still go before Congress for approval.

The letter 47 Republicans sent earlier this week warning against a nuclear deal President Barack Obama is negotiating with Iran probably shouldn't have been addressed to the regime's leaders, said Senator Ron Johnson, who signed the letter.

The Wisconsin Republican's comments in a breakfast with Bloomberg reporters and editors Friday morning signify how some of the senators who signed the letter are responding to a firestorm of criticism from Democrats, foreign negotiating partners such as Germany, and even some members of their own party.

``I suppose the only regret is who it's addressed to,'' Johnson said. ``But the content of the letter, the fact that it was an open letter, none whatsoever,'' he said in response to a question about whether Republicans regret their actions.

``This is such an important deal, it's a deal that rises to the level of a treaty that really should be evaluated and judged by the American people through their representatives,'' Johnson said. ``That treaty should come to Congress for an up-or-down vote.''

Johnson is likely to face a strong challenge from former Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI), whom Johnson defeated in 2010. Democrats were quick to jab Johnson over his Iran comments at Bloomberg.

"You don't get do-overs with sensitive foreign policy negotiations and Ron Johnson's 'oopsies' moment on the reckless letter he signed to Iran is just the latest example of how he puts partisanship and the Tea Party before common sense," Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee press secretary Sadie Weiner said in response.

midterms, but very well during presidential elections. The Democratic Party really needs to get off their duffs and educate Democratic voters to vote in ALL elections, not just presidential elections.

... so that there will need to be an election to replace them in 2016 rather than in 2018, we'll help get a democratic majority in the Senate that much more. I've got to believe in the next two years, like this letter demonstrates, that there will be some news on some of these corrupt senators that might provoke such actions.

Obama, saved Michigan Senate seat. He should have been
working for the Govern Seat.

Obama polls are much higher than, any GOP person, when
Hillary runs, she should run on Obama record, and he should be
out there everyday. Al Gore made a mistake not having Clinton
out there for Him, so did these senators in the Mid Term

Democrats need to brag about their accomplishments!!

Cotton surely the more experienced senators should have read it or had their staff to read it. A bad decision fueled by TP members who are not known for saying the smartest statements. The 47 signed the letter and now they should now have to suffer their decision.

First of all - it is not a treaty - dumbass Johnson - second of all - to be judged by the American People through their representative...like who? - YOU?- you and you neocon brethren need to stand down...you will not get another member of my family to fight your wars for you and your greedy minions..

..cotton and his defense contractors can take a flying leap off the edge of the world..wouldn't surprise me a bit - you and your elementary thinking cohorts think the world is flat! -

The American people can represent themselves quite nicely thank you - btw have you looked at the White House Petition lately - dumbass Johnson...you do not represent me!

NO WAR - period!

something has been agreed on. The gop takes every issue and turns it into a political opportunity to destroy what the Democratic Party and President are trying to do. The minute they are included they will leak the info and use it as a talking point. They cannot be trusted and they have proved it by this letter.
