'Mistrust Is Growing': European Leaders Blast GOP Senators for Letter to Iran
'This is not just an issue of American domestic politics, but it affects the negotiations we are holding in Geneva,' said German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
An open letter to Iranian leaders from 47 Republican senators has provoked sharp rebuke from European countries that are party to the nuclear talks.
Germany's foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier blasted the U.S. GOP senators on Thursday, telling journalists, "This is not just an issue of American domestic politics, but it affects the negotiations we are holding in Geneva."
"Obviously mistrust is growing," he added.
In addition, the Associated Press reported Thursday that unnamed diplomatic officials in France and London made similar criticisms of the open letter. "In Paris, a senior French diplomat said the letter made it hard on the American negotiators, who have been leading the talks with Iran on behalf of the rest of the group," wrote journalist Matthew Lee.

(81,322 posts)close at hand, or have enough working knowledge of it to know some of the people who signed on. It will give you another way to look at some of the gas giants on Pox Noise. No wonder they say and espouse those things! Look who they keep company with! Look who's a kindred spirit - and wants to throw his or her weight behind it and his/her Name On It. Look who the big mucky-mucks are, on there, and the familiar names. Many of whom will not surprise you if you consider who you always hear from on the Sunday shows and all over hate radio and Pox Noise in particular (and popping up on CNN here and there too). You'll start to connect dots and maybe grow at least a bit more concerned. And you'll be better able to follow threads. Watch who talks, who always winds up here or there, and how often. Like bill kristol, for one. You'll notice that both bill kristol and robert kagan have signed off on almost literally everything on which it's possible to sign off - 15/16 each. So there's the "My Two Dads" of the radical so-called-right.
You'll notice names that keep coming around on the guitar - veterans from past administrations, like Jeane Kirkpatrick, John Lehman, stephen cambone, dan quayle, elliott abrams, bill bennett, rumsfeld, cheney, scooter libby, ken "Iraq is gonna be a cakewalk" adelman, richard v. allen, ed meece, frank carlucci, and john bolton ( ). john mccain's on there. steve forbes is on there. jeb bush, of course. There are names you might not expect like Stephen Solarz, Dennis DeConcini, Richard Holbrooke, Dick Thornburgh, Morton Halperin, Rudy Boshwitz, and Vaclav Havel. Hmmm... General Barry McCaffrey is on the list. Signed only one of the 16 different edicts or policy statements or letters to VERY important people, like POTUSes (from a decade ago - a "Letter to Congress on Increasing U.S. Ground Forces" . Maybe we should keep that in mind next time we see him as a talking-head on TV? It's certainly validating or confirming what one might think of other list-ees on there like charles krauthammer, Peter Beinart, Steve Forbes, william schneider, james woolsey, frank gaffney, and my particular favorite under-the-radar gadfly, randy scheunemann.
Also - it gave me reason to take anything Michael Brookings-Institution O'Hanlon says with a grain of salt about the size of the Rock of Gibraltar. HE'S on that PNAC list, too. WTF!? Another WTF - Joseph R. Biden. Signed only one of the 16 - a "Letter to the Heads of State and Government of the EU and NATO, Sept 28, 2004." Same thing with Madeleine Albright (Madeleine Albright? WTF is she doing on there with those power-mad disruptive belligerent weasels?), who signed only that one same letter.
It's a fascinating list. It'll give you things to think about and research and drill down into, for days!
Know thine enemy!

Make no Mistake the treason that was exposed of the GOP plotting War: is so
they can line their pockets. They are end of time people, they don't
care if they blow up the World, as long as they get their money.
They cannot be trusted ever again with the American lives.
Cotton was willing to sell American lives for money.

We aren't part of the human race (they're evolved and we ain't) and we definitely aren't citizens of the world! (Especially the UN!)
We can decide who to bomb, who to assassinate, who to starve, who to shower with freshly-minted greenbacks. We can control the internet, the banking system, the spy networks. We can give solace to the friendly dictators and destroy democracies that diss us and our oil barons.
These children that are now in congress mainly grew up as privileged US-holes. Other than McCain's sojourn in Hotel Hanoi, most of them haven't actually lived close to the ground overseas.
Why would the Europeans (old or new), the Africans, Asians, anywhere; why would they trust the US-hole congress to do anything intelligent?
I do want to apologize for lumping the Democratic representatives in this group and it's unfair; however I think they were ineffective when they had power and complicit in many ways ($$$?) to why we are here, now.

Every time I think that the GOP has gone beyond the pale and SURELY they will pay for it at the polls, they hold their own or make gains in the following election. I've just come to the conclusion that half the population is terminally stupid.

Poison the well. Here's a haughty little pipsqueak who very much deserves AND has earned the right to be a one-termer. I find myself sending that vibe to mitch mcconnell. Enjoy it while you got it. YOU are gonna be a one-term Majority Leader. And by one-term, I mean the length of a Congressional term. Two years pal. That's all you've got. Dems are gonna be back in force next round, because it'll be a Presidential Election year and Dems always come out in bigger droves during Presidential Election years. They'll be back and they'll be voting on all the down-ticket races too. AND the republi-CONS will have many more seats to defend next time than they did this time. Democrats had the disadvantage in 2014. Both those disadvantages. That condition flips in 2016. He's got two years tops. He'll be back to Minority Leader in January 2017. So have your fun while you can, mitchy-boy. And don't bother getting too comfortable or too full of yourself. Besides, from what we've seen of the job you're doing so far, you've already proven to have very little about which to be full of yourself.

(47 posts)I read the link and was curious what other responses were out their from our other allies. What I found was that Common Dreams for whatever reason didn't report that John McCain was angry about what the German diplomat said and was quoted in the German press that the Ambassador had "no credibility" He also said he was glad that he signed the letter. Well that floored me I hope that this issue stays in the news for a very long time, if this is an example of what our "seasoned statesmen" are capable of. (81,322 posts)Glad you're here! Good find! Our dear Senator mccain has so far worn out his welcome by now that it's almost ridiculous. This is not the first time he's shown almost ridiculously lousy judgment. You could go WAY deeper and farther, but really, all you have to do is repeat two words to slam dunk the case against him: "sarah" and "palin".

(53,791 posts)maybe there was a better way to do it instead of the letter.
Now he's saying he's glad he signed the letter?
Further evidence that McCain is losing it. He apparently can't remember from day to day was his previous position was.

(92 posts)I agree. How can the international community ever believe that we are a united nation if members of our own government pretty much say it does not matter what our President does because we will kill it after he is gone. I am proud that our government can check itself and limit itself. That is why we are such a great nation. But, the way in which the letter was drafted and sent was completely disrespectful beyond anything that has happen thus far.

(5,141 posts)The whole thing is just bizarre, and the justification and excuses the GOP and their supporters are coming up with are even more ridiculous.
Ive never been jingoistic or one of those Were Number One! assholes either and those sorts are the ones insuring that we are nothing but a war machine in the future, churning out guns and bombs but contributing nothing meaningful in any other way.

(92 posts)The letter does make it easier to conclude that no deal will be reached. Why would anyone reach any type of deal if they feel it is pointless. It does seem like an attempt at war mongering even if it was not.

(35,687 posts)Way before bush stole the first election, I was on a forum with many posters from various countries in the EU. It actually astonished me how much they knew about the workings of republicans (especially the Nordic countries), and when bush took office, they had threads predicting the direction of the U.S.
It was amazing to me how close they came to the whole Iraqi debacle and all the rest--the tragic waste of human life, resources, and personal freedoms.
That was pre-DU for me, but just by a short time, and they were way more astute than I was at predicting the republican play book.
The fact of the matter is, they've been playing this game for a long time and everyone but the people who live here sees it for what it is.

This Cotton guy is like a slightly cleaned up right wing militia type. He's dangerous, he reminds me a bit also of the Martin Sheen character in the movie 'The Dead Zone".
I'm hoping against hope that this wakes up enough people so they can see which way the wind blows - and then maybe an awful lot of them can quit voting against their own well being.
That said it's going to be hard to bring about any significant real change with the current two party system, now that the DNC is basically the RNC of 40 years ago.

(67,782 posts)...at the same time those senators undermined the efforts of the British, French, Germans, Russians, and Chinese.
This is going to backfire big time, both here and overseas, and depending upon the negative press it gets over there, may have a big effect on the 2016 elections here.
