UN to investigate plight of US Native Americans for first time

Source: Guardian

The UN is to conduct an investigation into the plight of US Native Americans, the first such mission in its history.

The human rights inquiry led by James Anaya, the UN special rapporteur on indigenous peoples, is scheduled to begin on Monday.

Many of the country's estimated 2.7 million Native Americans live in federally recognised tribal areas which are plagued with unemployment, alcoholism, high suicide rates, incest and other social problems.

The UN mission is potentially contentious, with some US conservatives likely to object to international interference in domestic matters. Since being appointed as rapporteur in 2008, Anaya has focused on natives of Central and South America.

I'm glad Canada's been at least sort of attempting to attempt to address our own copious, copious issues there, at least. It's embarrassingly overdue in both countries (and others besides), no matter how it turns out though.

who surivived the genocide, with no end in sight, then it's an answer to many prayers, hopefully, if anyone investigates, anyone of pure mind and intention, that is. Clearly that leaves out racist, filthy Republicans who will be the ones to do all the shrieking about their American rights being violated by a foreign power.

Republicans have been the ones who raped them, like that South Dakota Congressman did as a youth, or stole them blind like Jack Abramoff and his entire right-wing gang of criminals. as well as all the other greedy, vicious "entrepreneurs" who have stolen from them, cheated, them, mocked them, and looked down their hog noses at them all these long, shameful years.

How dare ANYONE bitch about this. How freaking despicable.

Thank you, U.N. Please do more than go the the motions of an intelligent, human, and natural, appropriate response to human suffering.

I don't have much hope for any significant reform coming from one man making a two week tour.
