Leaders increasingly optimistic they'll strike Medicare deal

Source: The Hill

By Peter Sullivan and Mike Lillis

Drawing ever-closer to a bipartisan deal, top congressional leaders are increasingly optimistic Congress will pass a long-term fix to the perennial problem surrounding Medicare payments to doctors.

“I'm not going to say we've got it all resolved yet, but I'm optimistic that we will,” House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said Thursday.

Committee leaders in both the House and Senate introduced legislation Thursday to end automatic cuts to doctors under Medicare, though the proposal does not include provisions offsetting the substantial costs. Those much more controversial details are still being worked out by top leaders.

The broader package, which is expected to include a two-year extension of the Children's Health Insurance Program, could be released in the coming days.

3. Aren't progressive income taxes the same philossophy? Those who have more pay more?

Those near poverty or below won't pay... The Obama plan on this was to leave people with less money no payments at all. Only the higher income would pay.

Or are you speaking of the concept that all the recipients get the same amount to be paid, no matter what their income is? That could go to that GOP concept of it being welfare instead of an earned benefit. That's not right.

I do hope that premiums for basic don't go up and don't believe it's on the table, last I read. It's supposed to stay the same.

Otherwise, IDK.

5. There is going to be a lot of uncertainty with a GOP majority. They don't care about our plans.

9. You don't get it about "means-testing."

This is the usual Republican strategy of weakening political support government by gradually turning them into welfare programs.

6. They'd better go higher than poverty level, because that's not livable!

Let's really dream and hope they go with poverty level plus a zero. I kid, I kid.

I actually do believe it's utterly ridiculous though for some people to receive medicare or social security. They just do not need it, beginning with anyone who's served in congress, unless they repeal those outrageous pensions, which aren't as bad as they used to be but are still overly generous.

People with hundreds of thousands in the bank in addition to a couple homes, a yacht and... That kind of means testing I can get behind.

No one should be punished for good planning, especially given the fact that one serious illness will make all that good planning disappear in a flash, leaving only your home and benefits behind. At least so far they can't take your home. I'm sure the GOPTP (grand ol' party toward plutocracy) will want to change that ASAP.

Medicare as a voucher system. Yeshua wept. Me too. The Koch brothers are my governor...

and yes, they deserve to get what they have paid for whether you like it or not.

Joan Rivers was on Medicare. Was she rich?

I really don't care how much a person has as they pay more anyway. See my post below with a link to Medicare and the costs that richer people pay for it, yes, richer people!

I know of someone that is well off and pays about $335.00 for Medicare Part B. It has been that way for quite some time best I know.

Costs here:
