WASHINGTON (AP) Republican Sen. Dan Coats of Indiana says he will retire from the Senate and won't seek re-election in 2016.
Coats, 71, was serving his second full term in the Senate. He says that it wasn't an easy decision but that he's concluded the time has come to pass the job to a new generation of leaders.
He becomes the third senator to announce plans to retire rather than seek re-election. The others are Democrats Barbara Boxer of California and Barbara Mikulski of Maryland.
Republicans would be favored to hang onto his seat.

(94,745 posts)We elected Senator Joe Donnelly 4 years ago; we have a chance to pick up an additional seat towards our reclaiming of the Senate. However, this is Indiana. Who do you have that's acceptably liberal who can also win here?

(51,103 posts)Personally I think he didn't run for re-election the last time because he figured he would lose. He had a lousy constituency service, was on the wrong side of some issues, and a lot of his supporters are either dead or disillusioned with him. The ones that are dead were those that grew up with Birch Bayh who really made a difference.
If he did win it would be too close for him.

(6,994 posts)probably doesn't want this seat back but it would be just like having a Republican (another Blue Dog) if he should run.
Indiana has several qualified Democratic candidates that could run but would need a solid State Democratic Party Organization behind that candidate and right now we don't have that.
