Hutchinson calls for changes to HB1228
Source: Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
Hutchinson said he is asking that HB1228 be recalled so amendments can be added that bring it closer to the federal law.
"The bill that is on my desk at the present time does not precisely mirror the federal law," he said.
Hutchinson said "another option" would be to use an executive order "to make it clear that Arkansas wants to be a place of tolerance."

(60,536 posts)Gov. Asa Hutchinson on Wednesday called on the state legislature to recall or amend a measure billed as protecting religious freedom to make it mirror a federal version passed in 1993.
Mr. Hutchinson, a Republican, said he understood how divided the state and the country was over gay marriage and religion his own son, Seth, had asked him to veto the bill, which critics say could allow individuals and businesses to discriminate against gay men and lesbians.
He said he was also considering using an executive order that would make Arkansas a place of tolerance.
This is a bill that in ordinary times would not be controversial, Mr. Hutchinson said. But these are not ordinary times.

(35,701 posts)One would think that Arkansas would learn from Indiana but apparently not. When you lay down a turd it will remain a turd no matter how much you try to polish it.

Seems redundant to me and puts the lie to their story.

(11,014 posts)One doesn't need a law to say, "drink water if you're thirsty" -- they only need it when they want to say, "if a jew/muslim/hindu/christian/colored/gay/disabled is thirsty, you can refuse to give water."
It is legalizing discrimination in its purest form.

(19,567 posts)Bigots have been put on notice they're being watched and no one is buying their fake religious discrimination claims. As has been pointed out there are already laws which protect religious beliefs. There is zero need for further legislation except to attempt to legalize discrimination.

(30,058 posts)What concerns me is there will be more attempts in the future to broaden this bill to include the same crap they are pushing today along with more Hobby Lobby. I am thinking since the federal bill is a pathway for the RW to "justfy" hate.
