McDonald's raising its minimum wage

Source: Chicago Tribune

April 1st, 2015, 2:44 PM

McDonald's plans to raise starting wages by $1 above the local minimum wage at its company-owned restaurants and adjusting pay for existing employees, the first major move by the company after more than two years of union-backed protests regarding the pay of its workers and those across the industry.

The move goes into effect on July 1 and will impact more than 90,000 employees at the company's 1,500 company-owned U.S. restaurants, according to a letter from CEO Steve Easterbrook.

40 hours a week, 40 more dollars? With things the way they are in the fast food industry, I wonder if the difference will help. I hope so.

I don't want to criticize the increase, I know what a dollar is(I live on Social Security), I just hope that the upward trend continues.

Most managers are under orders to keep all hours below 30 per employee to avoid paying benefits.

I havent had a raise in years, I'll take a buck. No, I dont get min wage, but i still havent had a raise. So i've had to go out and make my own raise with side work.

I wish you did not turn my post into a confrontation. Did you notice that I qualified it? I know damn well what it is like to live on next to nothing.

The people who work for the ridiculously low wages offered by some businesses are to be commended. I imagine their money handling skills are better that most of us. Not having a raise in years hurts too.

There is much wrong with the pay scales presented to workers today. Yes, I'd take the dollar but
I also state that these jobs-and probably yours- are worth much more per hour.

Maximum hit to McDonald's bottom line will be $3.6 million per week or $187 million for the year. Even with a profit drop last year, the company still made a net income of $4.7 billion (I think that's the global total). They could easily afford another couple of bucks.

Compared to how much the company makes. But you can bet they will get far more than $187 in positive PR this year - they will probably spend two or three times as much to make sure this gets a positive spin in the press!

So a dollar more of $8.00 = $9.00 Yipppie!!!!!! Still way below what they should pay. And almost every order they ring up is over $10.00 a second, and probably costs McDonald's $2.00 if that.

as well as they should be paying and almost all companies including Publix are using computer based scheduling to keep as many employees as possible from qualifying for benefits on purpose which eventually could come back to bite them like the French royalty got bit.

Most McDonald's restaurants are franchised. This is a little better for the folks who work at 1500 McDonald's stores, but only 10 percent of the stores in the US are company-owned. And franchisees...well, they do whatever the hell they want.

undermine the movement for a true minimum living wage. By making this sort of PR move, they can get a lot of naive folks to believe that change will come without any actual governmental pressure, that 'the industry can police itself' as it were. Those of us who are old enough have seen that movie before, over and over and over. Private, capitalist businesses do NOTHING for labour that they aren't forced to, in one way or another. They're worried that the $15/hr movement might grow and spread and are simply trying to peel off workers who aren't committed to bringing such change.

"McDonald's plans to raise starting wages by $1 above the local minimum wage at its company-owned restaurants..."

The local min. wage in most localities is 7.50 so a dollar more is 8.50 which is what they pay NOW. These douche bags just don't get it...
