Dutchman held by AQIM Islamists freed in Mali (French defence ministry)

On Monday, French special forces in Mali released a Dutch hostage held by Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM). He was kidnapped in Timbuktu in November 2011.

A press release states that "the Dutch hostage, Sjaak Rijke, kidnapped in Timbuktu November 25, 2011," was released during "military action led by the special forces of the French army. This combat action allowed the capture of several individuals. "

"Mr Rijke was evacuated and secured in Tessalit, on the temporary advanced operation base. He is safe," the ministry.
