Bill targeting state employee union dues being heard in Texas Senate
Source: Statesman
10:45 a.m. update: The Senates State Affairs Committee will likely take up the proposal this afternoon or evening to effectively remove automatic membership in government-employee unions.
Among those planning to testify is Brian Olsen, former executive director of the Texas chapter of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. He told the American-Statesman he supports the proposal because last year the national organization effectively took over leadership of the state chapter hoping to turn Texas blue, prompting him to quit.
Theyre pushing a very liberal political agenda that we dont support, Olsen said, noting that many members of the state chapter are Republicans. He said most of those members do not think that protecting their interests extends to lobbying and campaigning on behalf of what he said are liberal issues.
That is also the view of Chris Carmona, the chair of the Texas chapter of the Federation of Hispanic Republicans. He said he is the former general counsel of the Houston Organization of Public Employees, and said barring governments from collecting union dues would not preclude union membership.

It is a right to work for less state. There is no automatic membership. This is for a dues deduction from your payroll. Duh.
effectively remove automatic membership in government-employee unions.

(667 posts)are currently involved in similar legislation? Destruction of public unions has always been a repuclican wet dream and they now control so many state houses I can only imagine. Is there a single source one can go to?

(6,936 posts)I'm sure this mouthpiece for anti-union forces had the same objection when his Governor and other employees superior to him were lobbying for right-wing causes.
Why don't they prevent insurance companies from deducting premiums, too? Does he agree with their politics, too?
What a maroon.

Unions are left with very few options to fight this kind of bullshit.
In my on union,,get this we have union members that want the wage and benefit package their union negotiates for them and then on election day they step in the booth and cast their vote for the guy that wants to take that all away. I have even commented to members on the job with this same statement and guess what I got scolded by our union rep and was told I should keep my political views to may self.
I said any member that wants to vote their union rights away on election day does not deserve to carry a union card and earn union fought for wages.
I believe part of this article but a part of this I don't believe..
This statement: "Theyre pushing a very liberal political agenda that we dont support"
Most union members are Democrats and I think for this article to say that most members are Republicans is straight ftom the State Republican Party bull shit files.Chris Carmona is an Republican attorney in Houston Texas I doubt that he is a union member

(160 posts)We have been fighting this every session here in Florida. We in the private sector unions have steadfastly supported dues deductions for our Sisters and Brothers in the public sector unions.
