Wayne Circuit Court ordered to hear union dues case

Source: Detroit News

The Court of Appeals this week ordered Wayne County Circuit Court to decide if a local teacher’s union violated state law when it entered into a contract that would require teachers to pay union dues for the next 10 years.

The three judge panel’s ruling favored three Taylor School District teachers, who claim the union and district illegally entered a collective bargaining agreement with a 10-year side clause to avoid Michigan’s right-to-work law, said Derk Wilcox, senior attorney for the Mackinac Center Legal Foundation, which represents the teachers.

“They’re just very pleased, particularly pleased, in the latest ruling,” Wilcox said Thursday of teachers Angela Steffke, Rebecca Metz and Nancy Rhatigan. “It affirms that they had standing to raise the question whether this is a legitimate contract.”

Wilcox said he does not know when Wayne Circuit Court will hear the case.

Kudos for the Taylor School District. Locking in benefits and pay for 10 years is almost unheard of from school districts.

Wasn't Chicago offering longer terms for all it's employees when it was bidding to get the Olympics? I think that was 20 years. Anybody know for sure?

ships have long term contracts when the travel through the lake going to Superior to process that iron ore into taconite.

I guess when unions try to do this it is against the law and they said they support the union---really, that's talking out of both sides of your mouth. Apparently they did not like the majority rule of 50+ 1, because both parties agreed to the clause----good for them---it stabilizes the budget for the county for ten years

They knew exactly what they were doing and I would not be surprised if some right to work people made contact on this issue---just an opinion, but it has been known to happen.

I wonder when they (these three individuals) go and buy a new car and they sign on the dotted line for payments they don't have long term contract.

How about when they use there 16.5 % credit card and there is a balance due, they don't have a long term contract.
House payments---the list goes on and on---they signed on the dotted line

I guess also when you have the likes of (R-Dennis Hassert and R-Tom Delay) performing this same item on the federal postal system on a voice vote in 2007, but with one "slight difference" the postal union did not agree to this, it was forced down there collective throats by congress

I don't support scabs, they want the benefits but they don't want to pay.

And in the present state of affair's in this particular state they have added the nail to the coffin with there support to "right to work of less" legislation and all the scab don't support the 50+1 majority rule.
