Liberty University responds to Romney controversy, angers online students

Source: CNN

Washington (CNN) – Liberty University reacted over the weekend to a brewing controversy over the fact that the evangelical school has selected Mitt Romney, a Mormon, to speak at the school’s graduation.

In a statement from Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr., the school says that the complaints have significantly died down and that many of those complaining “had no affiliation with the university.”

“We have also noticed over the last few days that students with reservations about Romney's appearance at Liberty basically fit into one of two categories,” Falwell, Jr. wrote. “They were either strong supporters of other candidates who were seeking the Republican nomination or they were online students who were not as familiar with Liberty University's traditions.”

After last week’s announcement, hundreds of comments were registered under the announcement on Liberty’s Facebook page. While some were supportive of the decision to invite Romney, a number of respondents were angered and posted their frustration to Facebook.

Although it would be one way to impress fellow fundies without having to deal with the B.S. student conduct code.

Standard of Dress for MEN

Hair and clothing styles related to a counterculture (as determined by the Student Affairs Deans’ Review Committee) are not acceptable. Hair should be cut in such a way that it will not come over the ears, collar or eyebrows at any time. Ponytails for men are unacceptable. Facial hair should be neatly trimmed. Earrings and/or plugs are not permitted on or off campus, nor is body piercing. Questions concerning the standard of dress for men should be addressed to the Dean of Men’s Office.

Standard of Dress for WOMEN

Hair and clothing styles related to counterculture (as determined by the Deans’ Review Committee) are not acceptable. Dresses and skirts should be no shorter than the top of the knee (sitting or standing). Skirt slits should be modest; open slits should be no higher than the top of the knee, closed slits should be no higher than two inches from the top of the knee. Shoulder straps should be no less than two inches wide. Anything tight, scant, backless, see-through, low in the neckline or revealing the midriff (in any position) is immodest and unacceptable. Slips should be worn under thin material. Earrings and plugs are permitted in ears only. No other facial piercings or plugs are allowed, including tongue.

NOTE: RA’s, RD’s, Deans and others will enforce dress code and educate all students regarding what is acceptable and what is not. Questions concerning the standard of dress for [men or] women should be addressed to the Dean of [Men or] Women’s Office who will be the final authority.

Respect While Dating/Social Behavior

All students are asked to display mature Christian behavior in social interaction. Proper respect must be shown to all individuals at all times. Harassment of any type will not be tolerated. Handholding is the only appropriate form of personal contact. Improper personal contact or other forms of public display are considered in poor taste. After dusk, students should not be alone with an individual of the opposite sex in any unlighted area such as the ball fields, parking lots, parked cars, ravine or other wooded areas, etc. This is considered improper social behavior.

Oh, and I ddin't know there was a Falwell Junior until a couple days ago; that was a downer.

The students have a right to feel upset, angry, and betrayed. They are TAUGHT at Liberty that Mormonism is a non-Christian cult. They are also taught that anyone not of their EXACT type of Christianity is a sinner and doomed to Hell (except, generally, for Jews), including such middle-of-the-road denominations as the Methodists.

It would be like a Vegan Conference having a butcher or the CEO of McDonald's as a keynote speaker. But worse.

The son appears to be even more of an opportunist than the father was. LU is going to lose donations over this.

hahaha

You'd be pissed too if you were being trained through dogma and misinformation to be a McManager at a school which is effectively un-ranked behind fifteen public Universities (most of which are also less expensive) and a dozen private ones in Virginia alone.

And then there is the fact that one can take actual college courses online from real universities for free. Here is one free example which is worth every penny one can dump into Liberty:
