Colombian Generals Investigated for "False Positives"

Source: BBC

The Colombian attorney general says he is investigating 22 generals for their alleged roles in the murder of civilians in the "false positives" scandal.

It involves the murder of civilians whose bodies were then passed off as those of Farc rebels or paramilitaries to boost combat kill rates.
Eight hundred members of the security forces have been jailed so far. Mr Montealegre said he would deliver the results by the end of the year.

He told the first conference in Colombia for victims of extra-judicial killings that some of the generals were still on active service and others had retired.

He said more than 5,000 members of the security forces had been implicated.

I know many DUers are very concerned with human rights in Latin America. We see this evidenced on the multiple threads greatly concerned with possible abuses in Venezuela.

This story is about arresting a pesky mayor or shooting someone in a violent street demonstration. It's about murdering thousands of people, then dressing them up in FARC uniforms and claiming they were guerrillas.

And it was done by a country that is a staunch US ally and a military that has been the recipient of billions of dollars of US military assistance. We have blood on our hands.

of villagers, performed publicly to instill the deepest fear possible, and keep them paralyzed with fear, almost unable to function.

People outside Colombia have known their sadistic love of public torture and execution, even the crematoriums they have used, when they have too many bodies to explain, for decades.

When that information has been posted here, we get nada from the racist anti-leftist Latin America John Birchers around.

They clearly believe all these countries are obligated to bow to the will of the U.S.'s dumbest and lowest, the US right-wing.

Lots and lots of blood, you said it.

egregious, wanton violence--with all sides--rightwing paramilitiaries, FARC, the government, the narco cartels--all seeming to outdo one another.

People just assume the worst about the armed actors in Colombia and have treated it like our support of the Saudis.

What is remarkable is the accountability that's being shown--at all levels, from the Presidential level down to the ordinary stormtroopers. Almost unprecedented.

You know the ones I mean. The ones that are all over every thread with something bad about Venezuela in it.

I don't think they give a rat's ass about Venezuela or human rights. They just hate commies.

But yes, good on Santos for carrying through with this. It's really quite horrid.
