(Tulsa) Reserve deputy bought cars, equipment for undercover unit

Source: Tulsa World

A Tulsa County reserve deputy who has been charged in a fatal shooting bought at least five automobiles and surveillance equipment for the undercover unit to which he was assigned, records show.

The incident was also not the first time Robert Bates has been involved in a use of force during an arrest while serving as a reserve deputy. Undersheriff Tim Albin told the Tulsa World Bates used a Taser on a person during an arrest in the past but no policy violation occurred.

Bates owns an insurance company and served as chairman of the Re-elect Sheriff (Stanley) Glanz Committee in 2012. Records show he donated $2,500 to Glanz’s campaign that year.

... In a statement Monday, Harris' family criticized the Sheriff's Office for allowing Bates to serve in the undercover unit. "We do not believe it is reasonable for a 73-year-old insurance executive to be involved in a dangerous undercover sting operation. We do not believe it is reasonable for Bob Bates to be carrying a gun that was not issued by TCSO. We do not believe it is reasonable – or responsible – for TCSO to accept gifts from a wealthy citizen who wants to be a 'pay to play' cop."

I predict the victim's family soon will own an insurance company and a LOT of money. Maybe even a fine home and several cars.

The entire broadcast is dedicated to providing a forum for police apologists to dismiss any complaint of police misconduct or incompetence and to blame every case of police homicide on the victims.

When will the public finally behave like Americans and recognize that police abuse isn't just isolated event by a couple of bad apples but it is a consequence of a culture of violence tinted by bigotry. The only thing that is infrequent or "isolated" is the occasions where police misconduct, abuse, and civil rights violations are captured on high quality video; there are more videos now because of the ubiquity of devices but the events of Police abuse are consistent and frequent and very common everywhere across America.

The "pay for play" type of cop buying shouldn't happen in Sumter County AL or Swain County NC, much less a large urban area such as Tulsa County OK with over 600,000 residents. How in a city of that size does the need to accept Sheriff gifts such as this even get to this point? Totally unacceptable behavior and I would be pissed but not surprised if this sort of thing goes on here.
