BP refinery strike still going strong

Source: Toledo News

Reporting by Dick Berry

TOLEDO, OH - It has been ten weeks since the strike by 325 workers at the BP Husky refinery in Oregon began. On Friday, there were only two picketers outside the plant.

Dustin Andecover, who was joined on the picket line by his eight year old son Kaiven, said, “We had heard three to five months which is average. I don't think most people are surprised by that.”

Andecover says the walkout is more about safety than economic issues. For now, he says he is trying to make ends meet as the strike drags on.

“It's definitely been rough. My wife doesn't work. If I ever get that tax return be a lot better. Doing what I can. Running through savings. Wife selling antiques,” said Andecover.

What does BP owe us? Nothing?

Certainly nothing to the workers. Scabs, outside contractors, replacement workers, broken union members. And to add insult to injury BP announces the desperate are producing more!

Capitalism on the march!

NEW YORK (Reuters) - BP Plc (BP.L) is producing record levels of diesel and jet fuel at its 160,000 barrel-per-day refinery in Toledo, Ohio, despite an ongoing strike by workers that has now stretched more than two months, according to a letter seen by Reuters.

BP, which jointly owns the facility with Husky Energy Inc (HSE.TO), sent the letter to employees on Friday.

The letter also noted that its 55,000-bpd catalytic cracker produced record volumes last week. The cracker, the facility's main gasoline producing unit, was unexpectedly shut down just before workers walked out of the plant on Feb. 1.

BP said the two sides have reached an agreement on most local issues, but they are still divided on the use of outside contractors at the facility. Most of the outside contractors are from the unionised building trades, pitting two traditional allies against one another.

"The company's ability to make key decisions is necessary to remain competitive and ensure job security for the entire workforce," the letter stated.

If we truly had a liberal media, this would be front page news and the lead story on most news organizations.
