TULSA, Okla. (AP) Defense attorneys released some of the training records Saturday for a 73-year-old volunteer sheriff's deputy charged with manslaughter in the fatal shooting of an unarmed suspect in Oklahoma.
The records for Robert Bates include certificates showing what training he received, job evaluation reports and weapons training and qualification records dating to 2008.
Bates' attorneys said the 64 pages of records released to The Associated Press and other news organizations include records Bates copied and kept for himself. Although there are time gaps in the documents provided, some of the records seem to indicate Bates was proficient in firearms and dozens of other training courses.
"For the first time today, we feel like someone's starting to look at the other side of this as far as his qualifications," Scott Wood, an attorney for Bates, said after the documents were released.

Supervisors at the Tulsa County Sheriffs Office were ordered to falsify a reserve deputys training records, giving him credit for field training he never took and firearms certifications he should not have received, sources told the Tulsa World.

I was wondering if these were the originals, the (demanded to be) altered or some entirely new fabrication.

(3,626 posts)ok, you were trained, that just makes your explanation that you made a mistake WORSE not better.
If I were his defense counsel, I would admit that he wasn't trained, and try and place the blame on the department for allowing an untrained contributor to participate as a real officer.
Instead, he's undercutting his own defense in his desire to continue to portray that he was a "real cop."

(34,136 posts)That question why Bates was going to tase the guy who was not armed, already on the ground, and already subdued. It doesn't make any sense and that aspect is not making headlines.

He should be saying he WASN'T trained, and it was all the dept.'s fault, if he wants to get his guy the lightest sentence. Jesus, this whole thing is a clusterfuck all the way around, with some poor fellow shot dead for no reason.

(60 posts)How did a volunteer deputy ever get involved in a sting operation in the first place? And how did Bates mistake a taser from a pistol surely boggles my mind. That he would even consider using it as two officers had already subdued the individual and were right there ... meant that he was putting them in danger of being hit ... we're talking about a serious brain fart that could have seen an officer dead instead of that poor suspect.

(13,108 posts)how well he was 'trained'.
He demonstrated on the Today Show where he kept his taser and where he
kept his 9mm.
There is no way to accidentally reach inside your vest, where he kept his taser, instead of reaching
for his hip holster, where he kept his 9mm.
He was a pay to play cop who donated money and equipment to the police department.
Of course he played the sympathy card with his wife and 2 daughters at his side.

(2,169 posts)They are only looking at what training he may or may not have received. He has already proven beyond a doubt he is not qualified. It doesn't matter how much training he has had (or probably ever would have). And I'll never be a ballet dancer no matter how much I train.

(14,176 posts)to stand up and indicate where he kept his gun and where he kept his taser. The gun was at the right hip; the taser was on his left near his chest. How he confused the two, asuming "ALL THIS TRAINING," is beyond me.
It's all very much like the Oscar Grant case...but even more inexplicable.

(16,079 posts)...it would have been easier to believe!
His claim of mistaking the weapon for a taser shows that his "training" wasn't very good, when you consider the weight difference between the two.
TASER X26c Weight: 7.2 Ounces
Glock 19 Weight:23.65 Ounces(unloaded)/30.18 Ounces(loaded)
Not sure which equipment he was actually using, but this gives a ballpark figure between a taser and a loaded weapon!
So, if Mr. Bates wasn't able to tell the difference between his non-lethal taser and his firearm...he is either a complete moronic idiot or he's lying!!!
And if any of the "training" was waived by the sheriff, then bates did not receive any training in that particular area and was just given s free pass!

(1,397 posts)Also, I have read he was wearing an equipment vest with the taser in a pocket on the front of the vest -- essentially, on his chest. His pistol was on his hip.
How did he confuse a taser on the front of his chest with a pistol on his hip??
Either:
1. He shot the guy intentionally, or,
2. He's too damn senile to be trusted with a weapon.

This idjit had has taser in a pocket on the FRONT of his vest. His pistol was on his hip. NO GODDAM WAY he reached for the taser and got the pistol by mistake.
Furthermore: I'm an EMT with a volunteer rescue squad in rural Virginia. We are ALWAYS in need of money. After over ten years of bake sales, chicken dinners, pancake breakfasts, and bingo, we raised the $250,000 needed to buy a new ambulance to replace our oldest one with almost 200,000 miles on it.
If someone were to come to us and offer to bankroll new equipment for the squad in exchange for which we would let him start a few IV's, run a cardioversion, start an IO - - - we'd throw his ass out the door and tell him to not come back.
EMS is serious business. I guess policing is a hobby.

(34,111 posts)A rich guy (with delusions of grandeur) is allowed to play cop because he has money and a hero complex (I cannot think of any reason a successful, wealthy person with a job and no need for money would do this in this manner) be involved in stings and arrests and general knowledge about the public (us = scum) and when he kills someone he gets air time for himself and his family on national TV? Was he cuffed and was the interview from the jail?
The Today show huh? I bet they video taped it for the fam.
This entire thing is disgusting. I cannot think of a single thing in this story that does not come down to the one, single point. Why are rich people who donate stuff allowed to be involved in our lives like this?
