Whole Foods charged by police for opening on Good Friday

Source: CBC NEWS

Whole Foods at Lansdowne Park is facing four charges for opening the store on Good Friday but plans to have the redeveloped area classified as a tourist centre could make it exempt from the provincial law in the future.

Ottawa police were called to the store on Good Friday after a complaint it was violating the Ontario Retail Business Holidays Act, which calls for most stores to be closed on nine major holidays, including Good Friday and Easter Sunday, with the following exceptions:

Gas stations.
Some small shops.
Pharmacies under 7,500 sq. feet.
Nurseries, flower shops or gardening centres.
Stores in specific tourist centres, such as the ByWard Market.
On April 3 the store said it believed it fell under the tourist area exemption, and that it would close its doors for Easter Sunday.

On April 20, Ottawa police confirmed the store faces four charges for operating a business and admitting customers on Good Friday. A court appearance is set for May 21.

I refuse to work on a holy day, and YOU CAN'T EITHER!

I love that GE thought it more important to build a software Sabbath lockout into my new stove, than they did to use the self cleaning door latch for a software childproof lock to keep the oven door from being pulled down on a small child. Priorities, right? Someone's stove use self control weakness more important than child safety.

as many people as possible get a holiday off at least once a month. Canada is like that. They have even started a new holiday in February called Family Day. The people still rule here...not the CEOS.

11. Then why not just declare one day a month as a generic "holiday"?

No need to use religious holidays.

stores for half a day only. They also couldn't sell meat after 5PM. In California, it had, mostly, to do with union contracts.

It seems they are changing them next year. The United States doesn't have rules like this but the outrage of opening thanksgiving was pretty known.

Hawaii's atheists have never protested against this, because they are not stupid.

So therefore, by that logic, they can be arrested just like people. Can we go after Koch Industries now?

is good friday to me except when I have to work and I really think everyone should get all those days off except in the stores I want to go to in order to buy beer, whiskey, food, clothes, electronic devices, musical instruments, automobile services, mattresses and furniture, cosmetics, junkshit from overseas, plants and flowers, home improvement goods and my other necessaries..

I mean, give em a day off and the next thing you know they'll want weekends and nights off too.

Do you think I'm being too harsh?

16. Why should anyone get a paid holiday? It's an outrage, I tell you! An outrage!

Ontario has nine public holidays:

New Year's Day
Family Day
Good Friday
Victoria Day
Canada Day
Labour Day
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Day
Boxing Day (December 26).

Most employees who qualify are entitled to take these days off work and be paid public holiday pay. Alternatively, they can agree in writing to work on the holiday and they will be paid:

public holiday pay plus premium pay for the hours worked on the public holiday;
or
their regular rate for hours worked on the holiday, plus they will receive another day off (called a "substitute" holiday) with public holiday pay. If the employee has earned a substitute day off with public holiday pay, the public holiday pay calculation is done with respect to the four work weeks before the work week in which the substitute day off falls.

Holidays off are good for society. People shouldn't have to work on holidays. Private Enterprize Freedom is still not acceptable in Canada. Good for them!
