Shame the US is more concerned about the Egyptian military junta than democracy.

Morsi tried. I don't even know if it was a winnable scenario for him. On one hand he did overreach, on the other, that's what they wanted him to do.

Shame all around.

Saudi & others backed Mubarak didn't like that he was overthrown, Qatar maintained their ties with the Muslim Brotherhood but not sure what Saudi view of him, they certainly like the current regime with their brutal crackdown & the Obama lifted the weapons freeze just in time for the bomb Yemen campaign

Egypt's Mohamed Morsi appoints hardline Islamist to govern Luxor

The Egyptian president, Mohamed Morsi, has appointed a member of the hardline Islamist group Gamaa Islamiya to the governorship of Luxor – a tourist city in which militants associated with the group killed 58 tourists in 1997.

The symbolism of the appointment has enraged Egypt's sidelined non-Islamist opposition, who see it as further evidence that Morsi is unconcerned about the country's increasing polarization.

Tourism is the lifeblood of Luxor, home to some of Egypt's most dramatic ancient temples and pharaonic tombs, including that of Tutankhamun. The city has been hit hard by the downtown in foreign visitors during the past two years of turmoil.

Members of the tourism industry are worried about the impact of the new governor both because of his ties to the former militant Gamaa Islamiya and because of the prospect of a hardline Islamist running the city and surrounding province.

"Is it unimaginable that those who plotted, participated or played any role in the massacre of Luxor, become the rulers even if they renounced and repented it," said Tharwat Agamy, the head of Luxor's tourism chamber. He said that he along with others in the tourism industry, politicians and activists, they were considering chaining the doors of the governor's building and sending him back to the airport.

I have no idea what an Islamist is but the individual in question is of the Saudi brand Salafi-Wahabbism. This led to more protests & demontrations against them. Muslim Brotherhood supported him, Saudi Arabia funded them for over a decade but fell out of favor with each other & they are the current bogeyman now which the current dictator is sentencing anyone that showed up a Muslim Brotherhood rally to a life sentence. One of the first thing Morsi was give himself dictator powers & perform show trials of the previous guys in charge.

Morsi was an extreme nutcase himself but on a scale he isn't as bad meaning he hasn't killed as many protestors as they guy has replaced him. People have been killed at a protest against the violence. It would be hard for anyone to maintain sanity if their government is constantly brutally cracking down on them.

Now he is convicted in a show trail which I oppose in any situation but my head hurts with the "good man". Allow freedoms & acting as humanitarians rather than human rights violators is a start in maintaining sanity.

Like I said though I hate these kind of trials especially in Egypt that are massively locking people away with speedy trials.
