Despite pleas of 7 lawmakers, state commission will rule on Sioux County wastewater well

LINCOLN — There will be no postponing a decision this week by the Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission on a controversial oil field wastewater disposal well in Sioux County.

Seven state lawmakers, including the speaker and the chairman of the Appropriations Committee, wrote a letter last week requesting that the commission delay acting on a request by Terex Energy Corp. of Broomfield, Colorado. The firm wants to convert an inactive oil well to a commercial injection well for water collected during oil and natural gas operations. Some of the same senators called for the delay during a vote last week confirming a new member of the commission.

Bill Sydow, executive director of the commission, said the letter arrived Monday. Commission rules require a decision on the Terex application by Thursday.

“We have to go by our rules,” Sydow said. “If we can provide any information about the oil and gas industry, or natural resources, we’ll do that at any time.”

This wellhead on an out-of-service oil shaft on rangeland about 14 miles north of Mitchell, Nebraska, marks where a Colorado oil company would like to create a disposal well for saltwater that is the byproduct of oil production. The proposal has alarmed many local people opposed to the size and nature of the project.

checked there was still the Oglala Aquifer under there them lands.
Hey, Nebraska, who really owns the water that you drink and grow food from, the oil and gas oligarchy or the citizens of the state.
Oh, and by the way who owns you, the oil and gas commission or the people of the state, or are corporations citizens.
As anyone checked the voter registration forms to see if Terex voted in the last election for any of your representatives, can you please provide the ballot on which they voted, along with there drivers license, authorizing them the right to vote-------that's pretty simple.
If they can't provide one then there application is null and void --------don't you think.

We sold our farm near Gering in 2014 because fracking was creeping closer ( along with declining water). Moved back to the SD Black Hills and now their wanting to frack in this area.
This is probably just the beginning for this crap.
Sad as I've got friends that ranch/farm near Mitchell.

planning to pollute the same area with fracking waste? This is crazy. What Nebraska should have is a lot of wind mills and solar farms.
