Community college recognizes union for adjuncts

Schenectady County Community College voted Monday to recognize the unionization of its adjunct faculty members, the Daily Gazette reports.

The Board of Trustees voted to recognize that adjuncts will be represented by the Service Employees International Union, Local 200 United.

According to the Gazette, a majority of college's 270 adjunct faculty members had signed union membership cards prior to Monday's meeting and are seeking higher pay and benefits through contract negotiations.

Adjuncts are those who work part-time or on a semester-to-semester or class-to-class basis for colleges and universities.

a lot of news recently abt the abuse of adjucts, hopefully this is the stirrings of a larger movement.
hopefully will improve the quality of instruction which is abominably low. although, in my experience, less so at community colleges?

I hear adjuncts are treated like shit and end up working more than they are paid for. I just recently earned my doctorate and will be working abroad, but want to teach online as well. The pay may not be worth it though.
