Major Florida school district dumps almost all yearend testing

Source: Yahoo! News / Reuters

MIAMI (Reuters) - The Miami school district, the nation's fourth largest, said on Thursday it was eliminating most end-of-course exams, including all those for elementary school students, the latest blow to standardized testing in the state.

"We have taken a responsible and logical approach to assessing students, in order to restore valuable teaching and learning time," Alberto Carvalho, the superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, said in an announcement on Facebook.

The move comes amid mounting statewide pressure to roll back standardized testing in Florida public schools, as well as recent computer glitches on computerized tests.

It is also puts a dent in the educational legacy of former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, a possible Republican presidential candidate, who championed standardized testing while in office to grade schools and teachers based on student achievement.

The kids in this state have been testing since March 1 and are scheduled to test through the end of the year.

Many of these tests, the teachers and the schools will never see. The students won't see them again after they finish taking the test. They will not know what they got right or wrong. Neither will the teachers.

Plus, the students are required to sign a pledge that they will not discuss the tests with ANYONE, including their PARENTS.

Who benefits from these tests? The students? No. The teachers? No. The school district? No. The state education system? No.

The only ones who benefit are the test venders who are raking in the dough. And the legislators, et als, who get lobbying dollars in their war chests.

So, HURRAY for Miami-Dade!!

A bill in the ed. committee calls for paying all teachers a base of 27 K per year, then pay out bonuses based on test scores. Also, schools would be rated A, B, C, D, or F based on the scores of the sub-population that scored the lowest.

The aim is clear: Have public education dry up and blow away.

The mandated tests are a great way to get public money into private hands. School districts spend a lot of money on these worthless
tests and scoring "services". It is a racket. It started with a long time friendship between the Bush family and the McGraw family of McGraw-Hill-Princeton Testing Service. This is a scheme to benefit private business at public expense. This is also a handy way to
punish and put down poor children and immigrant children so they "know their place".
