Nearly $75 million in back wages at issue

NEW ORLEANS A union representing hundreds of New Orleans firefighters is filing contempt of court charges against Mayor Mitch Landrieu and the New Orleans City Council, a move that comes days after a judge cleared the way for such action.
On Tuesday, WDSU reported that Orleans Civil District Judge Kern Reese granted a request by union attorneys looking to proceed with the motion. They are citing a failure of the City to pay a judgment ordered back in June 2014.
That judgment involves nearly $75 million in back wages.
Reese agreed, and, in his ruling, noted: "We have been kicking the can down the road for a long time. And maybe it's time to kick a can, but not down the road."
