PA House Again Passes ‘Union Intimidation’ Legislation

Source: Philly.com

Tony Romeo

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) — The state House has again passed legislation that would eliminate the exemption from certain laws, including harassment and stalking, for people involved in a labor dispute.

The House passed what supporters call a ‘union intimidation’ bill in the last two-year session of the legislature, but the bill failed to get through the Senate.

Democrats, like House Minority Whip Mike Hanna, argue the bill is unnecessary. He said supporters of the bill frequently cite the recent federal case involving the Ironworkers Union in Philadelphia:

“For acts of arson, assault, racketeering against non-union contractors and property owners. But all of these crimes are addressed IN current Pennsylvania law.”

dispute. I'm not sure if I'm understanding this correctly, but is this the jest of the bill?

(the final incident that triggered the court cases took place in my neighborhood and it was a big thing in the neighborhood papers)

Fortunately the fact that we have a Democratic governor means that should the State Senate even bother, it would be vetoed, and I doubt the state House would have enough to override. Existing laws cover anything that would address vandalism and corruption (as we see with my above link) without need for additional measures that are more designed to incrementally get rid of the Union's First Amendment rights. These from the same people who wished to take away my Fourth Amendment right to privacy by dictating that their "government" could force a transvaginal ultrasound on me or force a "Voter ID on me, in violation of a number of laws and Amendments, where they assume that the GOP's definitions of "rights" are supreme.

However, it's one thing for Union shops to protest non-union labor by bringing out "The Rat" (definitely draws attention!!!) -

But another thing actually causing damage to the construction equipment and to the structure that was under construction.

This just feeds into the "Union Goon" meme to the detriment of all the good work that Unions have done for workers. In every organization, there have been and always will be corrupt individuals who bring shame to the organization and its goal... And unfortunately, the broad-brush gets applied to everyone associated because of that single or few individuals. However existing laws are already working to prosecute those guilty of these sorts of illegal activities.

it would eliminate exemptions for unions for criminal acts like "including harassment and stalking, for people involved in a labor dispute". Yes, its redundant since those are already crimes under PA criminal code.

But I think I am a bit lost here. But how exactly is the law anti union?
