Brian Williams Scandal Widens With More Exaggerations Discovered
Source: Sfgate
Internal NBC review finds suspended anchor embellished coverage of Israel/Hezbollah conflict, the Arab Spring and more, according to reports
More exaggerations and embellishments have been found in Brian Williams previous reporting by NBC News internal review.
Both The New York Times and The Washington Post reported Friday and Saturday that NBC brass has found other questionable comments by Williams regarding his reporting in 2006 from the Israel/Hezbollah conflict; descriptions made about his reporting from Cairos Tahrir Square during the Arab Spring protests in 2011; the details surrounding him receiving a fragment of the helicopter that crashed during the mission that killed Osama bin Laden; as well as other undisclosed incidents.
The Post reported NBC executives including NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke, new NBC News chairman Andrew Lack and NBC News president Deborah Turness met in a conference room Thursday to discuss the current findings in Williams investigation. These three, led by Burke, will ultimately decide if the suspended Williams will return to NBC News.

(57,936 posts)It's unbelievable to me that NBC is only just now discovering these exaggerations and fabrications. (Assuming they are exaggerations and fabrications -- how would I know since I trust NBC checked the facts when the stories were first on the news.)
This looks worse for NBC than it does for Brian Williams. That NBC news broadcast all these lies without checking the sources and veracity and then comes up years later to admit to their sloppy journalism practices? How can we trust anything we see or hear on NBC if they are this careless and irresponsible?
So it makes me wonder whether NBC is now exaggerating what happened. Why did they delay checking these stories until now?
This looks really bad for NBC in my view.
And is there some big change going on at NBC? Is the news section being seriously redirected?
Will that affect MSNBC? What is the real story? I don't think we know yet.

(57,936 posts)much the same? Rarely does a news source actually report on a story that is not reported by all news media.
Now, we know that a lot of stories are given no publicity at all, no news coverage anywhere. What is going on here?
I would expect the major news media, the really big ones to have, each, its own kind of coverage of different stories and make different choices about what the most important story is or stories are. But???? There seems to be some agreement on most days about what the headline stories should be. Surely I am wrong about this, but the news is pretty boring and uniform in that respect seems to me.

(10,575 posts)The third filter in our propaganda model is what we call sourcing. The media needs sources of news. The big media want sources that will supply them with news on a daily basis that's credible, reliable and doesn't cost too much. Where do you get that kind of news? You get it at the White House, the State Department, the Pentagon, or you get it at the local city mayor's office, the police department, or the General Motors Corporation. These are the prime decision makers who make news.
There's a strong tendency for the media, especially the big media, to get close to sources that are powerful, who can give them news that's believable and news that doesn't cost a lot to get. So a lot of the news outlets have people stationed permanently at the White House, the State Department, the Pentagon, and so on. When they do this, they develop a certain relationship with these institutions. They become friendly with the people who provide them with the news, who are nice to them, and in doing that, they may occasionally get inside information, and so a symbiotic relationship develops between these big sources and the media.
These big sources with this symbiotic relationship don't want dissidence-people that will criticize them severely. So the media are a little reluctant to go out and spend a lot of money to find dissenters who will call the White House, or the President, or high officials liars, even when they lie. This is a very fundamental thing that practically every media analyst understands-that there becomes a dependence on these dominant sources by the media and a symbiotic relationship develops that affects what kind of news they will cover. It's also cheap and easy to take their statement. Nobody's going to question it except people who are powerless. This filter largely determines what is news, and it makes it difficult for the media to even look for other news, which is problematic and expensive to get.
