Riot Fears Prompt Closure Of Baltimore Mall After Freddie Gray Funeral

BALTIMORE -- Riot fears prompted a shopping mall to close Monday after the funeral for Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old who died in police custody here earlier this month.
Greg Harris, a spokesman for the Mondawmin Mall, said the mall made the decision in consultation with police and decided to close, at least in part, because of social media threats that there would be a riot at 3 p.m.
As the hour approached, large crowds of police and teenagers gathered outside the mall as a helicopter circled overhead. The teenagers started throwing objects as police fastened riot helmets.
James MacArthur of The Baltimore Spectator, which tracks crime and politics in the city, tweeted a video from the scene:

(182,829 posts)I was commenting because it is a big event and as bad as things are looking at this hour it will probably be worse come 7 pm.
I have been checking to see if there is any discussion of postponing the game tonight but I don't see anything yet.

(182,829 posts)Also it takes a lot of cops to secure the game and move the crowd in and out. They may be needed elsewhere - not that that might really help at this point.

(29,503 posts)as a means of settling disputes. This is simply a sociological truth, when you look at societies and their rise and fall, and how crime rates also rise and fall.

There are about 30-50 people around the police car.

on edit, the police just took over the scene where they were trashing the police car. Seven officers have been seriously injured, they're flashing on CNN's news banner.

Man, I hate the looting. Angry people never do their cause any good by looting.
I wish some calm and peace would take hold. But things HAVE to change. Sometimes riots are necessary to precipitate change.

The "least" among us, the AAs here in America - those you see out in the streets - were ALWAYS the bottom of the bottom. When others caught a cold, we got pneumonia. Democracy was "dead" the day the so-called "founding fathers" declared their freedom from King George while they and their progeny set about taking it away from others - notably enslaving over a million Africans.

(449 posts)A critical element of the Arab Spring is that groups of people that normally do not agree banded together to overthrow the regime. Muslims and Christians. Fundamentalists and liberals.
In the current American situation, this is still about an oppressed minority. To be an "American Arab Spring" it would need to be about an oppressed *majority*.

(5,557 posts)All it does is give opponents more ammunition. This is NOT how progress is made. This is not (for the most part) attacking symbols of power or meaningful civil disobedience. This is misdirected anger, greed, and stupidity.
Before you support the rioters, think if you really want to support people like this:
Threatening someone with a knife while wearing a black lives matter shirt
happily looting a store wearing a black power shirt
posing for a selfie while looting (look in the background)
