Jayne Meadows Dies at 95; Widow of Steve Allen Was Nominated for 3 Emmys

Source: Variety

Jayne Meadows, a longtime television actress who was the widow of TV legend Steve Allen and the elder sister of actress Audrey Meadows, died of natural causes at her home in Encino, Calif., on Sunday night, according to “Entertainment Tonight.” She was 95.

Meadows was thrice nominated for Emmys, the first time for a 1977 episode of the PBS show “Meeting of Minds,” the second time in 1987 for an episode of NBC’s “St. Elsewhere” on which she guested and the third time in 1996 for supporting actress in a comedy for CBS show “High Society.”

Over a showbiz career that spanned six-plus decades, Meadows took to the Broadway stage — in “The Gazebo” in 1958 — appeared in films including 1946’s “Undercurrent,” starring Katharine Hepburn; toured in her one-woman show “Powerful Women in History” for seven years; appeared with Allen onstage in A.R. Gurney’s “Love and Letters” off and on for 11 years; and was a regular panelist on the hit CBS gameshow “I’ve Got a Secret.”. . .

"Meadows was married to Allen, who was the first host of “The Tonight Show,” from 1954 until his death in 2000, and Audrey Meadows, who starred with Jackie Gleason on “The Honeymooners,” died in 1996."

She accepted scale pay for The Honeymooners in exchange for a residuals clause -- something very rare at the time. Everyone thought she was crazy at the time for doing this. Of course, she was far from crazy. She received royalties from the series for the rest of her life. Such residuals are now a standard component of all TV work.

Good for her for being so prescient. She must have raked a fair amount of money over the years from those residual checks.

Thanks for the information.

It should read "Meadows was married to Allen, who was the first host of “The Tonight Show,” from 1954 until his death in 2000, and sister to Audrey Meadows, who starred with Jackie Gleason on “The Honeymooners,” and who died in 1996."

{Steve} Allen was married to Dorothy Goodman in 1943 and they had three children, Steve Jr., Brian, and David. That marriage ended in divorce in 1952. Allen's second wife was actress Jayne Meadows, sister to actress Audrey Meadows. The marriage of Allen and Meadows produced one son, Bill Allen. They were married in Waterford, Connecticut on July 31, 1954.[22] They remained married until his death in 2000.

Few today remember what a genius Steve Allen was, often overshadowed by his comedic ability. He was talented in so many fields and Jayne always seemed to be right up there with him ( a "Meeting of the Minds&quot ?

and she would pop up on there every once in awhile along with the regulars like Paul Lynde, Rose Marie, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Charo, George Gobel and all the other crazy funny crew.

Yeah, Steve was from a different era of comedians, where they could do everything else too. Literally an all-around entertainer.

I remember her talking about her life when she was young, in China. I just imagine her life with Steve Allen, it must have been a wild ride. My sister and I used to watch his evening show all the time when we were kids and I remember her being on, and being something of a straight 'man' for Steve.

RIP Jayne.

Life on the Streets. She and Steve were a couple living in a high rise condo and they were being questioned about witnessing a murder (defenestrated victim). Somehow, they made it funny.

I was working 3-11 PM on the front desk of the Park Manor Hotel in San Diego. Jane Meadows was performing in a play at the Old Globe Theater in Balboa Park and she and her husband stayed in the hotel. It was not unusual for various actors to stay in the hotel.
She and Steve Allen would go out to dinner after the play and then stop by the hotel's front desk to check on mail, messages, etc.

They often stood there for about 10 minutes just chatting with me about everyday things. Talking with them was like speaking with friendly next door neighbors over the backyard fence. They didn't put on 'airs' of Hollywood celebrities. Just nice folks. They seemed to enjoy being treated like everyday folk, and seemed to like to linger and chat. Both were the nicest, unpretentious folks you'd like to meet.

It was a great experience, one I've obviously remembered all these years.

they played Dr. Erlich's (Ed Begley, Jr) long lost parents. Dr. Erlich thought he was an orphan and all of a sudden his parents show up - turned out they were spies and hadn't been able to contact him all those years. Just another one of "St. Elsewhere's" zany plot twists and parts made for Allen and Meadows.
