(13,601 posts)She accepted scale pay for The Honeymooners in exchange for a residuals clause -- something very rare at the time. Everyone thought she was crazy at the time for doing this. Of course, she was far from crazy. She received royalties from the series for the rest of her life. Such residuals are now a standard component of all TV work.

(30,250 posts)Good for her for being so prescient. She must have raked a fair amount of money over the years from those residual checks.
Thanks for the information.

(5,106 posts)Few today remember what a genius Steve Allen was, often overshadowed by his comedic ability. He was talented in so many fields and Jayne always seemed to be right up there with him ( a "Meeting of the Minds" ?

Yeah, Steve was from a different era of comedians, where they could do everything else too. Literally an all-around entertainer.

(1,945 posts)I remember her talking about her life when she was young, in China. I just imagine her life with Steve Allen, it must have been a wild ride. My sister and I used to watch his evening show all the time when we were kids and I remember her being on, and being something of a straight 'man' for Steve.
RIP Jayne.

(34,195 posts)I was working 3-11 PM on the front desk of the Park Manor Hotel in San Diego. Jane Meadows was performing in a play at the Old Globe Theater in Balboa Park and she and her husband stayed in the hotel. It was not unusual for various actors to stay in the hotel.
She and Steve Allen would go out to dinner after the play and then stop by the hotel's front desk to check on mail, messages, etc.
They often stood there for about 10 minutes just chatting with me about everyday things. Talking with them was like speaking with friendly next door neighbors over the backyard fence. They didn't put on 'airs' of Hollywood celebrities. Just nice folks. They seemed to enjoy being treated like everyday folk, and seemed to like to linger and chat. Both were the nicest, unpretentious folks you'd like to meet.
It was a great experience, one I've obviously remembered all these years.

(28,079 posts)they played Dr. Erlich's (Ed Begley, Jr) long lost parents. Dr. Erlich thought he was an orphan and all of a sudden his parents show up - turned out they were spies and hadn't been able to contact him all those years. Just another one of "St. Elsewhere's" zany plot twists and parts made for Allen and Meadows.
