CPS asking teachers to take 7 percent pay cut, union says
Source: Chicago Tribune
By Juan Perez Jr.
The Chicago Teachers Union said Tuesday that the district is asking its members to take a 7 percent pay cut in its next contract.
Union officials said they would discuss the issue further at a news conference Wednesday, but a statement issued Tuesday by CTU President Karen Lewis indicated that the initial district offer could lead to tough negotiations in the weeks to come.
"Once again, the board has created a fiscal crisis in order to justify its continued attack on our classrooms and communities. CPS is broke on purpose," Lewis said in a statement.
"By citing its so-called $1.5 billion deficit, the mayor is proposing a reduction in teaching staff which will result in larger class sizes and the loss of teaching positions."

(14,449 posts)Perhaps asking that when in negotiations would be more appropriate time to question. Each Union contact is different and on different schedules. They all don't negotiate at the same time. They also don't have the same Union. For example the teachers all belong to one Union whereas state employees belong to another. The police belong to yet another. Understand your confusion though. Takes a lot of time to study and understand the various unions and how they operate. I applaud you for asking the question because that is how you will learn especially on DU. Good luck on your quest for knowledge. It's always a great thing.

(23,664 posts)I hope it's the latter because you aren't very good at the former.
But you do seem quite adept at reading volumes into a 16 word post.
At any rate I'm glad you informed me about the ins and outs of public employee bargaining units. It might interest you to know that I was probably negotiating union contracts when you were still shitting yellow. I have been involved in this process from both sides. I was a union rep as early as 1966 shortly after I was discharged from the army and I was on the management side of negotiations from 1974 until I retired in 2001.
Imagine that in all those years I never knew that "teachers belong to one Union whereas state employees blond to another". I could have been so much more effective if I had only been so fortunate as to have your expert advice back then.
Anyway, good luck with your sarcasm sonny. Maybe when your voice changes you can call me and share some more of your wisdom with me.

(14,449 posts)You just didn't seem very knowledgable about unions when you asked a question outside the topic. Anyway glad you are up on unions with the rest of us. The more of us who understand the processes the better. Welcome!
