Judge: Dreamers can get in-state tuition in Arizona
Source: azcentral.com
Young immigrants granted deferred deportation status by the Obama administration are eligible for in-state college tuition, a Maricopa County judge ruled Tuesday.
The decision from Superior Court Judge Arthur Anderson comes in a lawsuit filed by former Attorney General Tom Horne against the Maricopa County Community College District. Horne contended that so-called "dreamers" offered deferred action status were not legally present in the U.S and could not get state benefits because of a 2006 voter-enacted law known as Proposition 300.

(1,986 posts)A kid from California will have to pay out of state tuition to attend Arizona State University, but pending deportees in Arizona will not. Exactly where is the justice in that?

(2,035 posts)tuition rates. If that kid from California wants cheaper public university tuition, that California kid can go to a UC or a State University, like Fresno State and San Diego State. Before this came out, illegals in Arizona couldn't even GO to university. Where is the justice in that?
You just sounded like the right wing screeds against immigration reform.

(133 posts)They are all imaginary lines created by nations and people for reasons of commonwealth. Do you want to get rid of all borders? Europe has effectively done so via the Shengen Treaty, which has had beneficial effects for working people from the east, but in the west, not so much.

(376 posts)That's a reduction from otherwise much higher rates as per reciprocal in state tuition agreements.

So why should students in the US illegally from a FOREIGN COUNTRY get privileges that students from another US state can't get?
Please explain.

This thread is going to go down the same route as most gun control threats. I will not take the flamebait at all.
This is a good ruling. Don't like it, get the legal standing and appeal.
Remember, the same thing was said about black people going to school under the black codes.
I wonder how Mexico felt with all that illegal American immigration into Texas that caused the Texas War back in 1836. Americans have never had problems illegally immigrating into other people's lands and demanding things. Just ask the Native Americans that.
Someone else does it, and Americans go insane.

(8,203 posts)I couldn't - CA has some fine educational institutions...as you point out -
the kiddos, so called "Dreamers" are here due to no fault of their own...our Latino community in AZ is an integral part of who we are, they are loving, family oriented, hard working people, who just want their children to have a better life.
..and then, there are those who just want to malign and swat away their very existence..
This is a very good ruling....talk about having to swat away the nutties on a daily basis..
..BTW - Arpaio is in some serious hot water..oops - my glee is showing...

(2,035 posts)I felt disillusioned with living there. So I packed up, moved overseas and am currently living in paradise. . .near Zhuhai Beach on the South China sea with my Chinese wife and, hopefully, soon-to-be child.
Paradise in geography, not in governmental policies.
I never lost my humanity, just my idealism. I really hope the entire system and the house of cards collapses.

(8,203 posts)He is feeling the same way - disillusioned..he will graduate magna from ASU (GI bill) - he spent much time overseas in the Pacific Fleet..with his last deployment in Dubia..
His beautiful wife, my adorable daughter-in-law of 2 years is from Cebu Philippines - she taught Math in Zamboanga for 11 years (Masters in Math) is teaching Math here - (1st year) - teachers are revered in the Philippines, she has found the behavior of the students here appalling..
They are both talking about moving to the Philippines..once my son has a couple of years teaching here..he said he cannot believe what has become of our country..our government is open to the highest bidder..I agree..
I hate to see them go, but you know what, I understand and can only wish them well with whatever choice they make...
Congratulations to you and to your wife...be well...

(2,035 posts)the type of school teachers dream of teaching at all their careers.
When I was in a regular chinese school, the horror stories I could tell.
Social promotion
Sleeping in class
Communist Party members using their power
Self esteem more important than achievement
Failure is the fault of the teacher
Classes of 60+ students
No rules enforcement
Selective rules enforcement (wealthy, powerful students get passes)
No intellectual curiosity
Regimentation
Forced fitness requirements under threat of corporal punishment
Teacher encouraged peer pressure and bullying
Rampant sexual harassment
Overreaching school administrators
Non-bible thumping parents with bible-thumper beliefs of "I don't like it, so it can't be done."
Teaching kids to be good test takers and not good students.
Regular Chinese schools are miserable.
