Michigan voters soundly reject Proposal 1 road tax plan

Source: Detroit Free Press

LANSING — Proposal 1, likely one of the most complicated and confusing questions ever placed on a Michigan ballot, was soundly rejected Tuesday as many voters expressed anger at lawmakers and state government for failing to come up with a better solution to the sorry state of the roads.

With all counties reporting, 1.4 million Michiganders voted no on Proposal 1 while less than 351,000 voted yes, according to the Michigan Secretary of State's office. The 80-20 rejection may be the most one-sided loss for a proposed constitutional amendment in state history.

Perhaps people are finally waking up. Republicons who currently have a stranglehold on the state legislature and governorship tried to avoid doing their jobs by instead trying to sucker voters into voting themselves a regressive sales tax increase.

1. i actually voted yes because it also reinstated the earned income credit for the working poor

i don't trust the psychos in Lansing to pass anything that would have any safeguards for the working poor. I imagine a gas tax hike (with no protections such as the earned income credit), which will harm the working poor horribly.

The @$$hats in Lansing have the potential to pass something even more regressive.

I struggled with this and didn't make a final decision until I pulled into my polling place.

2. The polls were saying 61% rejection, last I heard. This 80% NO vote is amazing!

And that proposal was a load of manure, for sure. Good riddance!

So much for Snyder's aspirations to the White House, too.

I'm glad to see that my neighbors are not all dunderheads.

Me too! I was sadly disappointed to see Carl Levin on a commercial stumping for this piece of garbage.

A PROPOSAL TO AMEND THE STATE CONSTITUTION TO INCREASE THE SALES/USE TAX FROM 6% TO 7%. TO REPLACE AND SUPPLEMENT REDUCED REVENUE TO THE SCHOOL AID FUND AND LOCAL UNITS OF GOVERNMENT CAUSED BY THE ELIMINATION OF THE SALES/USE TAX ON GASOLINE AND DIESEL FUEL FOR VEHICLES OPERATING ON PUBLIC ROADS, AND TO GIVE EFFECT TO LAWS THAT PROVIDE ADDITIONAL MONEY FOR ROADS AND OTHER TRANSPORTATION PURPOSES BY INCREASING THE GAS TAX AND VEHICLE REGISTRATION FEES.

The proposed constitutional amendment would:

Eliminate sales / use taxes on gasoline / diesel fuel for vehicles on public roads.
Increase portion of use tax dedicated to School Aid Fund (SAF).
Expand use of SAF to community colleges and career / technical education, and prohibit use for 4-year colleges / universities.
Give effect to laws, including those that: Increase sales / use tax to 7%, as authorized by constitutional amendment; Increase gasoline / diesel fuel tax and adjust annually for inflation, increase vehicle registration fees, and dedicate revenue for roads and other transportation purposes; Expand competitive bidding and warranties for road projects; Increase earned income tax credit.

Should this proposal be adopted? Yes or No.

"Eliminate sales / use taxes on gasoline / diesel fuel for vehicles on public roads."

"Increase gasoline / diesel fuel tax and adjust annually for inflation, increase vehicle registration fees,....."

How can one eliminate tax on gasoline while at the same time increase gasoline tax????

no matter which way the vote went.

From today's Free Press....

The special election cost Michigan taxpayers about $10 million.

Compounding the voter dissatisfaction, most of the details weren't spelled out in the ballot language. Passage of Proposal 1 would have triggered into law 10 bills that the Legislature passed during an all-night, lame-duck session in December and tied to the success or failure of the constitutional amendment that went before voters.......

This is some of what prompted me to vote no.

And I heard an idea from Peter Lucido, R-Shelby Twp. That seemed to make sense.

Also from the FreeP article...

Lucido, who has a plan to fund road repairs using interest from the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Fund intended to help auto accident victims, said: "If the people are voting no tax increase, then you have to give the people what they deserve." .......

Now the last part of that sentence just scares the freaking bejebbers outta me. Especially since thier trying to mess around with the no fault insurance.

It is a Republican plan to slow us down a bit.

a way to further screw the voters, their kids education(no more money for educational tools, computers ect, of which 'urban' schools don't get anyway), roads and bridges will fall into greater disrepair and other ways to 'punish' the Michigan voter for not fattening their wallets more. They will find a way to tax the Michigan voter, more. The rethug is just that....regressive thugs. Still, good going on turning back their "voodoo economics". Make them keep trying.....till they can be voted out. Levin was a disappointment though. What's up with him?

know with his corrupt governor and legislature not knowing how to write a sensible bill it really is amazing how they were using, and have used the logic of robbing from the poor and what's left of the middle class to pay for the rich corporation, millionaire's (I think Papa John) tax cuts and then turning around and trying to reverse that logic on a ballot in the same sentence.

And then to place this as a amendment in there Constitution would have spelled trouble in the long run for education and other programs like the parks (rob from that fund to pay for this fund) -----I mean really.

So instead of lets say, ear-marking 250 million in a surcharge as a gas tax to pay for there lack of oversight on the roads, since they the republicans have been in power------with there pipe dream of libertarianism.
They decide, this right wing legislature and the crony governor to take ten previous bills from the same legislature in power to make this work.
Then top it off by having to spend over 9.9 million on this legislation (to get it on a ballot) and then have it fail, no wonder your state is turning into a failed state, it reminds me of the song by Genesis------Land of Confusion.

Hey, Michigan don't you think its time for a change.

For five years and more, ever since Governor Granholm left, because of term limits.
Your state is like Kansas and Wisconsin, under these twit's (Snyder and the republican legislature) leaderships.
Have you really sat down and asked how much the wealthiest person and corporation in your state paid towards the roads and education, while trying to squeeze blood out of the same turnip from the poor and middle class.
It like a black and white silent film being presented, you see the film , there mouthing words and then you get a four or five word sentence for the scene to explain what they are doing.

I am glad some Michiganders voted no, but you got to vote no on these people in the next election.
And why are you building new hockey arena?
And why aren't you, lets say like the town of Greenbay, the owners of that arena.
It sure would give you a revenue boost for everyone, instead of one person becoming more rich and paying less taxes, who is using the same roads your trying to fund.

Just a thought
