Dozens of endangered cockatoos found crammed into plastic bottles

Source: CNN

Euan McKirdy

(CNN) At least 21 cockatoos have been discovered stuffed into 1,500 ml plastic water bottles at an Indonesian port during an anti-smuggling operation.

The cockatoos, which are described as critically endangered, were cut free of their plastic confines by Indonesian customs officials at Tanjung Perak port in Surabaya, Indonesia, after they spotted the consignment of illegally-trafficked birds.

Harbor police caught a passenger disembarking with two birds packed in jerry cans. Police searched the boat and found 21 more birds, stuffed into water bottles and packed in travel bags.

"The birds were still alive then but some were already very weak," Lily Djafar, spokeswoman for the Tanjung Perak police, told CNN.

A cockatoo that was successfully secured from illegal wildlife trading is seen inside an empty bottle in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia on May 04, 2015. At least 21 birds were rescued.

She was a baby in the spring of 2001. This year she has been nesting since January. My only job is to supply her with shredable paper towels and my food. Her feathers are a mess. But she doesn't have any bald spots so I'm thankful for that.

We also have a guest umbrella cockatoo and a live-in lesser sulfur crested cockatoo. Oh, and 24 diamond doves.

Not only is she tearing up paper but she is grinding her beak on the cage bars. The only time she is locked in is when I need to leave the house. A month ago she started talking again but only a few words.

Pookie was a rescue. She loves to bite! We call her the can opener in a feather suit.
We only had two doves in the beginning. Who knew they were gonna reproduce quicker than bunnies.

For the edification of non bird owners: a band must be placed on the baby bird's leg within 10 days of the hatch date because the foot/claw is flexible allowing the band to slide easily over the foot.

I'm glad Ginny's not here to see this - those pictures would have driven her into a fit of deep depression.

Besides the obvious animal cruelty, cockatoos are sentient - at least as sentient as dolphins and gorillas. They are also occasionally high-strung and neurotic, and stuffing a cockatoo into a plastic bottle, even if it's only for a few minutes, can have a traumatic effect on its long-term mental health.

Those poor little darling babies. I hope they all get the love and care they so desperately need.

I hope so much ALL the cockatoos can be saved, and the weakened ones can rebound.

Thank goodness someone, at least, found them in time before there was even more suffering for these brilliant little guys.

Perhaps they can do this to these smugglers too.

they're probably permanently traumatized. They may never behave normally again.

I hope there is a very special hell for the creature who did this.

Good work by the Indonesian customs officials.

I hope they throw the book at those responsible for this animal cruelty.
