Activists assail nuclear plant
Source: San Diego Union-Tribune
Protesters plan to gather on the outskirts of the idled San Onofre nuclear plant on Sunday amid recent appeals for more aggressive safety oversight by regulators.
A dozen environmental and nuclear activist groups helped put out the invitation to the rally at San Onofre State Beach.
The dual reactor plant run by Southern California Edison has been offline since late January after a tiny release of radioactivity was traced to a tube leak in recently replaced steam generators. Further inspections uncovered accelerated wear on generator tubes within both of the plant's reactors, with more severe problems at the southern, Unit 3 reactor.
Edison and Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials have made repeated assurances that the plant's reactors will not be started until safety is assured. Activists, from industry watchdog groups to outright nuclear opponents, continue to press their cases.
